What surface were the stones attached to? How where they adhered?

    They went right over the existing drywall. I thought some kind of backer board would be needed, but I guess not because there's no grout between the tiles - they're just stacked and adhered on the back only. It's been up well over a year now, no problems that I can see! Totally solid.
