Speed Queen Dryer issues

I’ll be calling a repairman for my 8 year old Speed Queen dryer because I think I smelled a very slight burning rubber smell today when the dryer was operating. While investigating I also noticed the oval-shaped dark area in the “screen“ in the picture. It may have been like this for a while, I don’t usually stick my head that far into the drum. It isn’t just discolored, it is a little rough and maybe even rusty. What might cause this? And what is the piece called so I can tell the repairman when I make the call? Could it be related to a burning rubber smell?

Some discoloration on that (heat input) grill is not unusual, although yours is a bit more prominent to the defined oval area than typical. Is your unit gas? Burning gas produces water vapor which accounts for the roughness or slight rusting. The gas burner housing is in the base under the drum. Airflow is pulled in through the burner and that grill, out through the filter/blower housing. Electric models also typically have a bit of heat discoloration on the input grill. A burning odor isn't so much normal, could be indication of excess lint accumulation outside the drum or a problem with the burner adjustment.

The discoloration is caused by heat.

Do you use high heat setting?

My old Whirlpool and current Electrolux (both electric) never discolored the grill but I NEVER use high heat or Sanitary/Allergen.

I always use medium high or medium heat.

My choices for heat are Regular, Perm Press and Delicate and I almost always use Regular.

If you have an 8 year old dryer that suddenly has a burning rubber smell when operating then definitely have it checked out !

Update:

I had the dryer checked today by the company from which I purchased it. This is a very small, family-owned company.

He turned it on for a few minutes and said it didn’t smell (it had been on for 45-60 minutes when I smelled it before).

He turned the drum and said the belt was fine.

He put his hand at the vent and said there was great, hot airflow.

He asked me how old the vent hose was. (I’m not sure but I know it isn’t as old as the dryer). He told me that if it was burning lint that it would smell more like burning paper than burning rubber.

At least he didn’t charge for this fancy evaluation since he was in the area anyway.

The odor I detected was very, very slight. I have a very sensitive nose. I guess I’ll use the dryer again and keep a very close eye (or nose) on it. If I still smell something I’ll call a different company to do a more thorough evaluation.
