Want to spruce up my living room!!
Comments (21)Sorry, but I failed to mention that the photo was taken from the front door entry way. Yes, my front door is actually on the "side" of the house so if I change the arrangement to have the sofa facing the dining room, people will only see the back of the sofa when they enter. I have a sofa table in the entry way that is the same Drexel Heritage Burl Ash as the other tables. I'm not opposed to tossing all the upholstered furniture but would prefer to use the tables ( I do like them after all these years and they are excellent quality and condition). I agree that everything needs to be closer and will try moving things around to get a feel for the change. I do have some black in the rest of the house ( bar stools, kitchen nook table) but do prefer earth tones....See Moreneed help sprucing up the front and the yard of my 1st home
Comments (45)First of all, storm doors do cut down on heating and cooling costs, and they can be a safety feature as you can keep a storm door locked and then open the inside door just slightly to see who is at your door and then close and lock it quickly if need be. It is possible to get a storm door that looks formal enough for the front door. That being said, I would suggest you paint the brick and all the trim of the house white. This will go a long way in brightening up the grey-beige of what appears to be limestone. When the time comes to replace the roof, I would suggest you choose a white or off-white metal roof to add brightness to the exterior color scheme. If you do not care for these neutrals, then add a metal roof in a light blue or light green that harmonizes with the limestone shades. Then, I would suggest you add shutters in the same color as the roof. White-painted window boxes that hold colorful flowers will enhance the appearance of the home too....See MoreMy Mantle is "Wrong"
Comments (11)I think the mirror size is a little large, and doesn't show to advantage with the style of firescreen. Could you perhaps use it elsewhere, where it stands alone on the wall? I would try one more rectangular black and white print, also framed in black, in the next size up from your largest existing prints, placed vertically. I might choose a print that is a little more distinguishable in subject from across the room. You could consider matting the prints in something like the brick red rather than plain white (for a color match, you CAN paint white mats with regular acrylic paint from the craft store, if these are not art quality items)....See MoreWhat's wrong with this picture
Comments (18)chiming in again but only at the original picture. Sconces, by the way, in todays decorating options can go anywhere. Halls, bedroom, bathrooms, lovely in foyers. Some sconces are a bit outdated but used creatively, can be a great element. I will stand with my original suggestions for the picture placed too high over the wall. Viewing some new pics, I lend the following. The two chairs placed on either side of a table, nice, but too many legs showing. I feel a closed piece add elegance. A piece with doors or drawers is both attractive and functional to store "stuff" The photo showing both sofas again has a lot of legs going on, A closed end table on the end of the sofa, same for coffee table and at least one full chair without legs showing. Replacing a chair may not be a financial option for you / Start with smaller changes and the rest will come together. A floor plan is only as good as the room size, the furniture you have to keep, and what the eye can concentrate on. Less, in some cases, is best. You have some nice pieces and your own style. Sometimes we need to edit. And change can be exciting. Move some pieces out of the room altogether and then add with new changes. Take advantage of the rooms strong points. Re: the armoire. Armoires are big. They are a strong element. ( I have one in my bedroom. ) It is like the elephant in the room but it adds height where everything else is low. An armoire can be very functional as mine houses, a TV, clothes ( mine has two drawers) books and stationary, movies, linens and "stuff" Try placing yours kitty-corner if possible in your room to soften the look. Stand back and look. What does your eye tell you?...See MoreJordan Roon
