Outdated Bathroom needs help, stat! :)

last modified: 5 years ago

Looking to do an economical refresh of our master bathroom. Keep tile if possible. New vanities and mirrors. New shower with tile. Thoughts on a color scheme if trim is an off-white in this room and throughout the house, including the master bedroom? I am not sure where to start. Any advice is appreciated! TIA!

Don't throw good money after bad. This bathroom needs an overhaul; best to save up so you can redo the whole thing.

Economical means paint…paint the vanities and change the wall color.

Not looking to paint the vanities. Looking to replace them. Guess I mean more of an overhaul, but being mindful of how the money is spent. If that makes sense. @Sabrina- what do you recommend?

Funny, the vanity cabinets don’t seem to bother me at all. I would keep those, add hardware.
New faucets, new lighting, new , probably smaller mirrors.

I’d remove that tub, do freestanding, paint , tile shower, and new floors... 😬
I’m not sure how much of this you can do, but this is what my goal would be assuming the layout stays ( another way to save...)

Start by browsing the million photos on Houzz and creating an idea book for the ones that appeal to you. It will give you ideas of the realm of possibilties, and you can see patterns in your taste. And it helps us see what you're aiming for.

What bothers you about the room now? e.g., not enough storage, or insufficient light, or toilet too exposed.

It sounds like you like the tub and floor, but not the shower or vanities. Given that the shower and tub are of the same material, what is it that you don't like about the shower?

Redoing the shower will be the most expensive and labor-intensive part of the renovation.

What's your budget? That will determine the scope of your project. Have you priced anything yet? You'll find that labour is what costs in a bathroom reno so if you can DIY, you'll save loads. When you say you're keeping the tile, you mean the floor tile? A new shower will probably cost more than new flooring.

Agree with painting vanities and changing counter tops. You can spend your money somewhere else like resurfacing front of the tub and add an interesting accent tiles/backsplash around it. I agree with new faucets.

I would change all the hardware to black

Paint the vanities a dark greige to match the flooring

Frame the mirrors in a black or dark gray to coordinate with the vanities or hardware

    Select new matching light fixtures

Take down the blind and replace it with translucent window film to block the vew and overlay a black Twig Sculpture to add some texture to the room

    Repaint all the walls.

    Purchase new bath towels.

If you like your tile, keep it. If you like your tub and it's in good condition, consider updating the faucet and changing the tub surround. I agree that new vanities would be nice since the ones you have are pretty builder-basic. But if the vanity cabinets are in good shape and meet your needs, you might just replace the counter, sink and fixtures.

The main issue with the bathroom is that everything is blahge. It needs some contrast. If you're keeping a lot of what you have, then your base colours are sort of sand and white. Here's what I'd do:

    • bronze or black fixtures
    • white quartz counters
    • replace the mirrors with something more decorative, perhaps oval to echo the tub shape
    • upgrade your vanity and shower lighting and make sure you choose bulbs that are at least 3000k (some say 4000k but that's too blue for me).
    • paint the walls a soft blue or green
    • add some pretty baskets, trays or boxes to your makeup area to organize your bottles
    • get an upholstered stool or pouf for the makeup area
    • buy towels that are a deeper version of whatever colour you put on the wall (e.g. navy or deep green)

@JudyG Designs I had a local designer tell me it would cost close to 60k to do an overhaul so I am thinking that painting the vanities, changing out lighting and mirrors, etc is the way to go. I originally wanted to tile the shower, but I want frosted glass so that neither me nor my husband are on display for my kids when they come visit. WIth frosted glass, I am not sure it is worth it to have a really nice tiled shower. No one will see it except for the person that is in the shower. And I am fine with the shower walls as is. They are easy to clean since there is no grout. I would like to at least switch out the pan. I am thinking I will keep the tile too.

So all, suggestions on colors to paint the walls and vanities? Thanks all!

Beside painting vanities, wall and replacing mirror and light fixture, I would change the faucet on both vanities and re-grout your floor tiles in a beige color family. It looks gray on my screen.

I am leaning towards painting our vanities and then changing out the faucets and adding hardware. Also new mirrors and lighting. Paint the walls. Keep tile and shower and tub. Not sure it is worth it to redo the shower for me since we like glazed/frosted doors. Will get new, more modern doors to put on shower. If replaced the floors, not sure what I would even do. Light and white floors look nice but show ALL THE DIRT. I like that mine hides the dirt. Another option would be a wood looking floor.

What do my color people out there think of Sherwin Williams Manor House for the vanities? And Shiitake for the walls? I like very earthy colors. The rest of the first floor is very pottery barn esque.

Thanks all! I was using this pic to try to paint on different colors. :)

We might suggest framing the mirrors, adding new hardware, and getting new lighting. Here is a design we recently completed which might help you with ideas.

They are made of art glass. Derek Marshall Lighting in Sandwich, NH makes them.
