No dwarfs for me this year. We are going to be away from home several times during the growing season so I'm not planting anything in containers that need daily watering.

I grew several on your list in 2019 and the dwarfs I planted in the ground didn't produce very well. The ones I put in HD buckets produced much better but blew over a few times during storms.

We want to try growing a few dwarf varieties indoors under grow lights late fall through winter. Could you recommend 3 varieties? We like slicing varieties. TIA.

My favourites are Dwarf Rosella Purple, Mr. Snow and Wherokowhai.

eedlings are yellow instead of green. Same soil, same fert as the Husky cherry red in the next pot. did fert with dynagro half strength about 5 days ago. thoughts? just potted up last night; asssume ok to do another half strength shot of fert. See attached picture.

Looks like a magnesium deficiency. A little Epsom Salts will fix that up! Sometimes the fertilizers are a bit lacking......

Funny Jack - my experiences were the opposite. My yields were much better in ground than in containers.

Labradors - I really liked rosella purple too. I sold all the Wherokowhai fruits - so didn't get to taste any. But the fact that we can't pronounce it leads a lot of people to buy it. LOL. I finally got it down this winter - fer-dow-co-fi. Wonder if that might turn customers off now that I can say it.....

Phled - I'd look for the shortest to grow under grow lights. I hear new big dwarf is pretty short, but can't attest to it for taste or production. I honestly liked all the varieties I've grown. Victory seeds has a lot of the DTP varieties - maybe search there for the shortest?

The tomatoes in the tunnel survived the 26 temps the other night, and a few are flowering. The first blooms for me always seem to be fused - anyone else experience that?

ekgrows, Little Lucky is, perhaps, my favourite tomato and Wherokowhai beat it in a taste-test. I hate growing varieties with difficult names, and called it W for a few years, but then I liked it so much that I made myself remember and learn to spell the name :).

I've got fruit! Both of my Almandine have fruit - which is interesting because I think that is supposed to be the latest dwarf I'm growing this year. All others are flowering, and I've been pinching off the megablooms.

The first two are Principe Borghese and Maglia Rosa, and are not dwarfs

Maglia Rosa is "compact". I grow it every year in a 3-gall container and start it early. Flavour is really good, with an added advantage that it tastes good as soon as a little pink is showing :).

Phled Z6a-MA For growing indoors under grow lights I strongly recommend the micro dwarfs. They are 4 to 16 inches tall depending on variety and size of pot. Make cherry tomatoes and with the new introductions at Heritage Seed Market now come in a wide range of colors. Flavors can vary from eh to yumm and I have not tried all the varieties yet but I do know the new ones were all selected for flavor if you can get some seeds.

Sigh I need to go transplant my dwarf seedlings into cups today. Nice project to do while I watch the snow falling... I planted:

Kangaroo Paw Red- red early

Dwarf Artic Rose - pink early det

Dwarf Mandurang Moon- PL white cherry early

Dwarf Orange Cream - PL orange early

Dwarf Pit Viper - stripped mid

Dwarf Wherokowhai - PL bicolor large mid

Dwarf Pink Passion - pink oxheart - mid

My dwarfs did better then my indet tomatoes as I managed to get at least one seedling of each variety. More in most cases. Wry grin however my seed starter recently got flipped over so now I have no idea what any of them are except dwarf potato leaf or dwarf regular leaf. Thankfully all of them produce different types of fruits so I can ID them that way...

Note that due to my growing conditions I tend to select early smaller fruited varieties...

I am running out of room here so have not started my micro dwarf tomatoes for the year. AND have 16 project seedlings that need potted up to their 1 gallon grow bags...

High tunnel Dwarf tomatoes. Every plant has fruit. Again - the Almandines are the star. 14 on this plant, although I'm sure I missed some.

Purple Heart is second for best production thus far.

Not sure who this is. LOL.

It's been a hard year thus far. No rain, very late frosts, followed by a week of extreme heat, etc. But these beauties are still going strong......

No Dwarf Project for me this year- my usuals were put on hiatus this time. My "main crop" is four big sauce makers. It's been dry, so had to go for that this time around.

My dwarfs I am growing is are superbush- poor thing was the only of a dozen that survived some unusual early season problems. A "Health Kick" I picked up at a local nursery that sounded interesting. Not really a dwarf, but Japanese Trifle is also being grown in containers this year with the superbush and Health Kick.

I started harvesting some dwarf tomatoes just about 2 weeks ago. :)

@ekgrows, last year Almandine was my LEAST favorite, and I did not start any this year, but one came up on it's own, and looks pretty amazing with several fruit. This is without me changing any of the soil in the container, and no feeding until I realized the Amandine must really want a second chance.

@Labradors, A worm got the first ripe MR, but probably it was red because a worm got it. Mostly flowers so far, and several little greenies, but I feel fortunate because I only had one seedling and it didn't look great. There is a second one ithat was a volunteer that I dig up and put in the same pot.

Nanellle, it's great that you have two Maglia Rosa's. I don't think its possible to have too many :).

@nanelle_gw (usda 9/Sunset 14) - Funny! Why was it your least favorite? Taste, production, disease? I've counted 47 tomatoes on my home plant already, and it's only the beginning of July!

Brandyfred was my best producer last year, but I have it in a different location this year, and she's lagging a bit. Maybe If I put her where my almandine is, she'd be a bit happier.

@Labradors - I'll have to try Maglia Rosa next year.

@ekgrows, those look amazing! Last year I had two, and they stayed relatively stunted, looked sort of sickly, and the 'maters had a lot of BER.
