I have had one - grown in a container - for maybe 10 years. Mine only receives partial sun because of my location, but it does fine. IME, flowering and berries are not prolific, but that might be a factor of it not receiving full. I don't really care, as it is the character of the shrub that appeals most to me.

(btw, it is 'cotoneaster', not cottoneaster. Not pronounced cotton-easter, either :-))
