You could enlarge the window slightly but keep it white to match the other windows. You don’t have room for a double door. The additional door wouldn’t open to the same level floor on the inside of your house.

Remove the planter, widen the steps, put in a floor to ceiling long window.

@ikloes, I should have mentioned, we are leveling out the landing inside so it would be one level.

I wonder if we can widen the steps without ripping out the existing ones.

I like the planter because I'm a gardener and I love seeing beautiful flowers adding color, but if you don't use it, it just takes up space. You definitely need to add color to that front entry.

I don't see why you can't add a black window there; your storm door is black and it would work specifically for that location. personally I think it would look weird to have a white window next to a black door.

If you get a door with a sidelight it will be one unit and you don't have to worry about that choice.

If you push the front door out to be flush with the house wall you are going to need a new landing for the door. You don't want the front door opening to steps. A good sized landing is going to take two, possibly three of those steps. That includes that section of the planter box because the landing needs to cover the door and the new window.

You are now missing the needed steps to rise up to the door. That means the entire set of steps has to be removed and pushed that distance away from the house wall to get your steps back. What this will do is make for a new planter box on the house face at the driveway side between the house and the bottom set of steps.

If it were my house, I would spend the money on a more substantial railing, new front door and great landscaping.

I would add that widening the steps without ripping out the existing steps will probably lead to cracking.

I don’t mind the outside as it is, the goal is to create more space in the foyer. If it were just the outside I was trying to spruce up, I’d definitely spend the money to update the railing and door. We had planned to bump the current exterior landing out to the end of the roofline and replace with granite steps but the section that faces the driveway would need to be filled in with something, otherwise there will be a big missing piece of stone wall. This where I get lost. 😔 maybe a shrub would cover it?
