IMO it depends on many things. I think a pool has to be the shape that works with your home and also the reason you want a pool. If you swim laps then IMO the pool needs to be rectangular and long enough to allow proper laps. I certainly would not put a bar in any pool. I love infinity pools if your lot allows from the choices you give I think the one with the lounge area would be my choice but not elevated.

I grew up in a home with 6 kids, 2 acres of land with a 20x40 swimming pool. Our next door neighbor had another 2 acre lot that was mainly wooded. All the kids in the neighborhood walked or rode their bikes to our homes and we swam and played explorer or hide and seek in the woods. I have wonderful childhood memories from that time, but reality is that people don't have 6 and 7 kids anymore and gatherings like that where parents are worried that there are 20 to 30 kids in their pool are long gone.

As we became adults the deep end just wasn't used all that much. We still ran out to cool off in the summer, but mainly stayed in the shallow end where your feet touched the bottom, maybe swam a few laps, but it wasn't the central gathering area for the entire neighborhood any more.

My sister has a smaller lot and a smaller pool and 2 kids who would have a few friends over. The adults still hung out mainly in the shallow end where you could get cooled off and sit on the steps or walk around in the water and talk. Once the kids were grown she downsized and didn't get a pool, but she misses being able to just relax in the water and is now getting a hot tub.

When I lived in California a lot of my friends had pools with integrated hot tubs. Many complained about the expense and work when after the kids were grown the only thing that was used was the hot tub portion. We did spend a lot of hours hanging out in the hot tub in the evenings.

My other sister has a community pool in the neighborhood. I see kids there all the time, but seldom see adults hanging out except for the parents watching over little ones.

The only person I know who swims laps every day has a membership to the Y and none of the work or expense of owning a pool.

Patricia is 100% right that the pool should fit the intended use. Do you have little kids who will have friends over and swim for hours at a time or will you have bbqs with a bunch of adults who want to sit on the edge and get their feet wet or may stand around the shallow end talking or will you have intimate gatherings with one or two friends and hang out in the hot tub?
