Lamp vs end table width

My new end table is 14 inches wide unfortunately the lamp that I have fallen in love with is 16 inches wide. I am aware of the rule of 2 inch smaller lampshade versus table width. So will it look completely ridiculous if I do get this lamp? My second favorite lamp is 14 inches wide which is the exact width of the table. Is that a possibility to have the exact width? or should I stick with the rule and pick one that is 12 inch wide?
