Kitchen Layout Help!!

5 years ago

I am posting the original plans for this space. we had to move the window to the right 28 inches because it was being obstructed by a giant pole outside the window which could not be moved. We would have stood at the window and looked out directly at it. The island will have no sink or appliances. It is a prep area/eating area only (spray painted orange). The fridge will be on the far left wall beside a pantry. Can anyone help with a new layout/placement of appliances? This is a 23 foot wall. There are 7 feet slider to window. Please be kind! Thank you in advance.

    We would need dimensions of the actual space showing the window and slider location as your existing plans don’t have either indicated

    The French tempered door in the kitchen was removed to leave just a wall.

    You mentioned you want an island to be a giant slab, but an option would be to put your sink in the island-opposite of where it is now. Move the dishwasher as well. Sorry! Do a search of sink in island on Pinterest for the visual.

    So the window moved closer to the slider than is shown in the floor plan? If that is the case, from the slider, have the fridge, dishwasher, sink, cooktop, and wall oven on the pantry wall. But that pantry is too deep and narrow.

    Quick look...

    Move the DW to the other side of the sink to get it out of your actual Prep Zone. The island will not be that great for a Prep Zone if it doesn't have a direct water source. Two KEY components of a functional Prep Zone are (1) direct water access (e.g., prep sink) and (2) sufficient counter space (36" is the bare minimum, 42" or more is much better).

    When the sink & rangetop/cooktop/range are on the same run, there should be at least 42" between the sink and rangetop/cooktop/range (with no DW in the middle) and at least 24" on the other side of the rangetop/cooktop/range.

    Ideally, I'd have:

    36"W corner cabinet*

    + 12"W cabinet*

    + 24"W DW

    + 36"W (to 36"W) sink base

    + 18"W trash pullout

    + 24"W drawer base (or wider)

    + 36"W rangetop (with a 42"W x 24"D hood above the rangetop)

    + 24"W drawer base on the other side of the rangetop

    + 31.5"W tall oven cabinet

    ==================

    241.5" = 20'1.5"

    * Or, if you don't like corner cabinets, a voided corner (24" x 24") + 3" filler + 21"W cabinet

    If there's a prep sink in the island and it would be the preferred Prep Zone, then I'd put the trash pullout in the island (next to the prep sink) and at least 42" on one side of the prep sink & at least 12" on the other side (or 18" if you put the trash pullout on that side of the prep sink, which I would recommend to get it in the Prep Zone (ideal location), near the Cleanup Zone, and near the Cooking Zone.

    1.5"D counter overhang

    + 18"W trash pullout

    + 21"W sink base

    + 42"W drawer base(s) (or more, if room)

    + 1" decorative door/end panel

    + 15" seating overhang

    ============================

    98.5" = 8'2.5"

    For seating, be sure you have at least a 15" clear leg/knee overhang. If you're a tall family or a family with long legs, then I recommend 18". For short-to-average heights/leg lengths, 15" should be sufficient. Don't go any shallower (unless you're trying to discourage people from sitting there).

    Aisles...

    With all three primary work zones (Prep, Cooking, Cleanup) on the same aisle, the aisle between the rangetop's front/knobs (~27" from the wall) and the counter edge of the island should be 48". Aisles are measured to/from the items that stick out the farthest into the aisle -- appliance handles, counter edges, etc. They are not measured to/from cabinets. Cabinet measurements only include the box, they do not include doors/drawer fronts (~1"), counter overhang edges (~1.5"), etc. (If you will have a gas cooktop instead of a rangetop, then the depth is 25.5" from the back wall) In your case, you have:

    Island & rangetop aisle...the front/knobs on the rangetop on one side of the aisle -and- the island's counter overhang on the other side.

    Island & Refrigerator aisle...the handle on the refrigerator (~31" from back wall for counter-depth/36" standard-depth) on one side of the aisle -and- island overhang on the other side.

    Oh wow!! Thank you! What are your thoughts on me moving the dishwasher to the other side and then instead of a wall oven doing a full range/hood 24 inches from the sink and allowing for 12 inches on the other side, then putting the microwave somewhere near the refrigerator?

    The pantry is deep, but the laundry room on the opposite side was expanded to make the side on the kitchen more shallow/normal depth of a cabinet.
