How Far Can Apple Scab Fungus Spread?

Hi all,


We have a large, old, red flowering, crabapple tree that suffers from apple scab every summer. Some years, it will lose its leaves in August. Other years, it's not noticeable until fall. I am considering whether to cut it down and plant a Royal Raindrop crabapple tree in its place.


Anyway, last weekend, I planted a McIntosh apple tree sapling and a Snowdrift crabapple tree sapling. Each are planted about 60 yards away from the infected tree. Now, I am wondering if this was a mistake as both varieties are supposed to be susceptible to apple scab. Do you think they will get infected with scab, and will it make any difference if we cut down the infected tree this spring?
