where are you .. big city name ... that you already have plagues of bugs???

i hope you used horticultural soap.. and not dish detergent ...

next time.. the first step is just a blast of hose water ... after that fails ... then you try more potent things ...

any chance at a pic .. though i understand.. most of us cant get pix of tiny bugs ... lets see the transplant ...

it never fails to amaze me.. that bugs can find stressed plants ... so im wondering about fixing the stress of transplant ...

and btw .. have you found any damage that requires eradication ???

I'm just outside Washington, DC. I was surprised at something so early, too.

I'd already dug her up when I noticed the bugs falling on me, so I just continued to her new spot.

I did put some Bayer Tree & Shrub stuff in the transplanted soil. It has done wonders for other infestations in previous years, on a Sunset maple and native beech trees here. Figured it can't hurt.

The leaves aren't curling or dying at this point, although they're just not as robust as the other trees or its own lower leaves.

I'm keeping an eye on the other trees next to which it had been planted in a big raised bed.

BTW. Aoba Jo is said to achieve 3' at maturity.

I'm here to tell you a happy one of probably 10 years is now about 7' tall and shows no signs of slowing down. I am in a horrendous drought zone in the middle of 7b. Called an "atmospheric trough" by National Capitol Parks and Planning. Another story. Anyway, this baby has withstood seriously dry conditions and was tested in my unmitigating full sun. That didn't go so well, so since she was then potted, into the afternoon shade she went back. But she's a survivor!

Gonna go out and spray me some bugs.

Can you post a photo? It is impossible to tell what might be up just from your description :-)

Also, I would avoid spraying anything on a JM other than water. Their foliage is quite delicate and anything other than water applied to the foliage can cause a phytotoxic reaction. And since insects of any kind rarely bother JM's, water is all that is necessary.

I've experienced that with a Corillium I lost.

It seems to depend upon how developed or mature the foliage is. Right now, everything is so soft and fresh.

Even very mature, older trees will experience it and new spring growth is even more delicate. Just don't do it :-)
