I will probably follow your lead on the semi-hydro when mine do arrive. Please update us in a couple of weeks. I promise to do the same for the ones I ordered from My Home Nature. Because we all know that problems can be delayed.

Spartiodes is such a cool-looking hoya. Not that I don't love most hoyas, but for some reason that one fascinates me!

Popmama, I love spartioides, too. I have read that it is hard to root from cuttings. Mine does have some viable roots, but I am concerned about it. In retrospect, I wonder if a should have gotten a couple of small size ones. The one I got is a medium size plant.

If anyone can do it, I'm sure you can! You've got the skills. If I order again, that is one I'd like to have. I saw some pictures of the blooms recently. It blooms on the ends rather than on a peduncle like other hoyas. It's just weird. I like weird.

Since they're still relatively small, I have room. When they grow up.... not sure. I'll worry about that when it happens :-)

I still don't even have a shipping confirmation. It's been 8 weeks since I paid the invoice. I know it says between 6-8 weeks. So I guess I will wait a few more days to inquire.

Waiting is the worst, especially when you have to order so far ahead.

So far most of mine are looking good. Spartioides has lost some of its.... leaves? needles? peduncles? whatever you want to call them, and Kaimuki's leaves are looking a bit limp.

I got a response from them today and they said to please allow two more weeks. I hope they get here early that week. Late that week I leave for a few days to plant shop on the Western slope of Colorado.

Wendy, is it possible to see a recent pic of how yours are doing? I'll bet better now that the days are getting much longer. Will you be putting them outside soon or keep them inside?

Mike, my Ah Hoya plants are still in the expanded shale. They all look good so far. I'll wait until I see roots poking out of the net pots to plant them in my regular mix. The leaves of the kerrii variegata spot leaf are still a little thin and droopy, and the spartioides dropped some of it's leaves (I think that they're technically considered peduncles). I'll take some pics tomorrow. I'm not sure if I'll put them out or not. If I do, it won't be until after they're transplanted.

My other Hoyas will go outside when the weather warms up a bit more. Quite a few of the nights have been in the 30's lately.

I can see new roots on almost all of the plants, and a couple have new growth starting. Today I repotted a few of them...

I cut both Sissy and Green Apple Melang into 2 pieces. The other ones have also rooted.

Those are some really nice looking roots! I wonder if the irregular shape of the shale helps to keep the cuttings stable? I find that my cuttings try to escape the LECA, in part I think because they're so round and there's not much friction or weight to hold them in...what do you think?

Thanks, everyone :-) I was pretty surprised at the roots that these have developed in just 19 days. I've had good luck with rooting in shale, but these seemed to root extra quickly and seemed to develop denser little root systems. I wonder if it's the Dyna Gro KLN that helped. My Asean Plant cuttings and these are the only times I've used that in the water.

Sunfleurpower, I think you may be right about the shale. The irregular pieces seem to lock together and hold the cutting in place. The roots really cling onto them. I remove what falls off easily, but I just leave the other pieces stuck to the roots when I repot it into regular mix. I think I'd damage the roots too much by pulling them off.

Mike, my son bought the expanded shale. All I know is that he drove to some farm in Connecticut and filled up a couple of big bins. I'll ask him where and let you know.

When I'm rooting them, I keep them in shade (a little sun does reach them, but they're not really close to the windows) and on a heating mat.

Dyna Gro KLN is supposed to stimulate root growth.... Oh, I guess you googled that already :-)

Have you considered trying to grow one in the shale as a potting medium to see how it does? I can't imagine roots looking or growing as fast as that in a potting mix. You might be able to water as often as you want and any hoya just might be happy in it alone. I might give it a try.

Or maybe shale with just a bit of something else to keep moisture longer?

Turface kind of resembles that and many grow in just turface..

Some actually grow theirs in semi hydro and do well, I am thinking the shale is more like a very porous mix when you think about it since their is many tight places for the roots to cling to if that makes sense)

He said he brought his own bins and filled them from a big pile of it. This was a few years ago.

I have thought of mixing some in with the coco chips, bark, and coarse perlite that I normally use as a mix. I do have some turface, but don't use it much. The particle size of turface is a lot smaller than the shale.

I start cuttings semi-hydro, but so far haven't kept growing the plants that way.

Those are some great roots SLD! I found expanded shale at my garden center and tried it with sigillatis and picta, but no luck. Both cuttings molded over. For rock material, it does seem to hold moisture well. How much of a reservoir do you keep while rooting?

sunfleurpower, I keep roughly 3/4 of an inch of water in the container while rooting. Some cuttings (ones that were more wilted) I put in an enclosed container to keep the humidity up. In this case, those were Kaimuki, kerrii variegata spot leaf, the top part of Green Apple Melang, and spartioides. So far I haven't had any problems with mold.
