I do not like fake wood for decks so I agree the real wood and I agree very little upkeep with a covered deck .

Composite decking is almost always going to be the better option as far as quality is concerned. And it's still quite a bit more expensive than cedar (even though it is high). Also, if you do choose composite you might look at additional options aside from Trex. It's really not the best quality. They just do a good job with their marketing and getting their name out. Aztek is really good.

If you were our client, being that the deck is covered I would advise you to go with cedar. Unless of course the budget isn't an issue.

I want to know where your contractor is gettong his composite decking. Because I couldn't build a deck with Trex or any brand of composite for the price of cedar. Unless you're talking about top grade clear cedar.

I badly want to incorporate wood and composite into my new deck design. I am at the Jersey shore. Zero shade. Full sun. Extreme temps. My contractor doesn’t agree with putting wood anywhere because of the exposure to the elements. I would love some advice. Thank you

I’m with your contractor. Keep exposed surfaces synthetic. Or ipe if you really want to spend money. Where did YOU want wood?

The deck is very big. I just wanted one area in wood as a visual compliment. I love when there are multiple products used.

Trex Transcend. We did ours in 2021 and absolutely love it. Added Westbury Rivera II railings in back. Open deck not covered. What did you wind up going with?

We went with trex. We love it.

Joyce, the only thing with synthetic (and I'm speaking of Trex as that's what we have), is in full sun it gets very hot underfoot and you have to make sure you wear shoes/flips when walking on it.
