Can someone tell me what this is? All over my yard in the east Bay Area.

Yes it is and they have roots that go practically to the center of the earth. I've found that the best way to get rid of it is to keep pulling it up, getting as much root as you can each time (which isn't much). Takes a couple of years but I've gotten rid of most of mine, which seems to have come in on a load of mulch.

What I've done in the past is to remove the foliage, dig down, all around it, then cover with a tin can and recover. I've also used aluminium frozen pie dishes.

Thanks everyone. I’ll keep at it with pulling it up - right now there’s so much of it I’d have to dig the whole yard up to cover it - but I’m glad to know it’s not a futile effort!

That looks right, thanks! USDA seems to agree that pulling it over and over is a good approach. I’ll stay realistic and be happy if there’s just a little less of it over time.
