There are so many it could be. Wide Brim is a possibility. Have you seen it bloom? The buds would be particularly attractive if it were WB.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't recall the flowers but I will watch this year and be sure to get a picture. WB is one that I had at one time and I don't recall it being this big. WB is a dark green and I wouldn't call this one dark green nor do I think it gets greener as the season progresses. I also think WB has a wider cream margin. You are right, there are so many it could be!

I don’t think it’s WB either. I have that one and it is darker with outstanding flower blooms on very long petioles. It looks like Fragrant Bouquet to me. Look in the HL for pictures and info.

Thanks Debra. FB is of a thin substance. I have FB and it has a very different look when first emerging. My FB right now is just starting to unfurl. FB also has slightly wavy edges that I am not seeing with my NOID. I will definitely have to check to see if the flowers are fragrant as I know that will help to narrow it down.

Shade Fanfare?

undertheoaksgardnener7b Do you have Shade Fanfare? I would love to see more pics of it. I got this from the HL: The foliage starts off golden yellow with a creamy edge, turning to chartreuse with a white edge by mid summer. This would describe mine. Most that I have seen with the apple green and creamy/white edges are fragrant hostas with thinner leaves. I just found a pic of mine with a flower and it was taken in June - this would be in line with Shade Fanfare which is said to bloom in early summer. HL: Excellent rapidly growing medium-sized specimen. Very floriferous. Mine is not exactly floriferous as I had just one scape but I'll watch it this year. I think this is the best option I have seen yet - thanks.

It sure seems to fit the bill for Shade Fanfare. Utog has a good eye!

Yes, Debra, I think Utog may have nailed this one. The apple green center with a cream/white margin is not as common among the hostas. I'll be watching for the flower in June and hopefully that will settle it once and for all.

Please keep posting as the season progresses. I have a young Shade Fanfare, but mature specimens seem to look like yours per online photos.

I will try and post again. I don't even know how old mine is. It showed up last year in a pot and I can't recall seeing it the year before. So weird. Either last year was a 'leap year' and it changed so much it grabbed my attention (may have brought it home from our Hort Society plant sale in 2019 as it looked poor and wasn't sellable and I couldn't just toss it) or it is a division of one I have that under different site conditions looks nothing the parent. My son laughs at me because he says "don't you have one you are trying to ID every year? How does that happen?"

Hi Peren. and utog colours are so hard to tell and compare. Your SF is beautiful. I'm in Windsor, ON 6B and mine should be light like yours as it has only been out for a week. To give a better sense of colour, I have moved my NOID beside some well known Hosta in my garden for comparison.

Fragrant Bouquet on top - which has a more smooth texture, NOID below.

June Fever to the left and NOID on the right.

NOID on top, Paul's Glory on the bottom.

Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. This one is my challenge for the spring!

Not Shade Fanfare

The pictures in the garden look like a completely different plant. Sorry I cannot help! Good luck. It is a pretty plant. Maybe you can just give a name like “Spring Challenge”? :)

utog, the difference in the light could be the reason the plant looks different in the garden. it was sunny today and I just moved it around beside hosta I thought others would know the colour of in the garden. I had to take the shots in the shade or the colours bleached right out. Well, I think I'm running out of suggestions now. Hopefully one day I will be on a garden tour and I will see it and go "there it is - that is my NOID". and with my luck the owner won't have it labelled! Thanks for your efforts.

It looks like either Fragrant King or Fragrant Queen to me. You'll be able to tell when it blooms.

Thanks utog and Barb. Agree that your plant is definitely not Shade Fanfare. Be sure to take more pics throughout the season, especially the buds and flowers. It is a nice plant but it would be even better with an ID!

peren, yes I agree, it would be even better with an ID. I will post when it blooms. Hopefully that will yield more info.

utog, thanks for the pic, SF seems to have more wave to the leaf edges.
