'Eugene de Beauharnais'

This rose has been in commerce as 'Eugene de Beauharnais' -- classed as a China.

Vintage Gardens sold it as "Le Grande Capitaine" ("Mrs. Keays' Grand Capitaine") and classed it as a Bourbon (and in truth, it seems to me to be more of a Bourbon) opining that the China 'Eugene de Beauharnais' is "lost." I tend to call it 'Eugene de Beauharnais," because I bought it under that name, and I'm not very changeable.

Call it what ever you wish, it's a lovely thing . . .

Here are 2 shots of one of my EdB - one showing the entire bush, and one of part of the same bush in the landscape. Both from this Spring. One of my favorite things about it (along with the fragrance - it is the most fragrant rose in my garden by far), is that it stays short - in my garden where all of the roses seem to get gigantic no matter what they are "supposed" to do.

It's a lovely thing, Jeri. I almost got this rose several years ago but was scared off by all the reports of others' difficulties growing it. Maybe it would have been the same for me and maybe it wouldn't. I can't even grow Julia Child, for pete's sake! But I grow some wonderful roses, now rare, that others don't grow and I'd never have tried them had I listened to everyone else. Anyway, such a pretty thing! I hope others will be encouraged to give it a try now.

Bourbon roses don't love me *quite* as much as I love them, but they do well here over all. And Someday I intend to have EdB/LeGC, if I can ever find it in stock! lol.

As an aside, two of my favorite roses are blooming now, both of which I have because of your photos, Jeri. Grandmothers Hat is right beside Pulich Children, and the contrast is stunning (I hate that word, but...).

Thanks for the enabling, Jeri. You're as priceless as the roses you show us ;)

I've put him on my wish list thanks to all of you enablers!! Gorgeous carmine flowers, short habit, and tremendous fragrance?!? Gotta have it!
