Fuji isn't known to be an apple that bears fruit at a young age; or precocious. However EMLA 27 is known as a very precocious rootstock. I've done a little grafting; but I'm no expert. But I seem to remember that you shouldn't use a scion with flower buds on it. I couldn't tell one bud from another; but I believe you shouldn't use two year old wood for scions. I did have a graft of a Redfield bud the year I grafted it and it wasn't scion wood that I had cut. Redfield is known as a precocious apple. That tree got browsed the next two years and this year it didn't bloom.

Don't worry about it not branching; that's normal. It's what is called a whip. When it reaches a height that you want it to start branching cut it above a bud on the side of the tree where you want a branch to go. It will form a branch from the bud below the cut. Don't let the tree spend all it's energy ripening that fruit. You need to develop a strong root system. I put my grafts in the ground after about three weeks of healing time.

Thanks for the tips, John D. I thought I had a 1 year old scion, but maybe not. My plan is to try this as a container apple. I understand this rootstock has its issues but I wanted to try it anyways. I'll make another heading cut above a bud and see what happens next year.
