a better pic of the bark also ... looks kind of cherryish from here ... to be technical.. that would mean prunus ...

size of fruit might also help ID ... not sure trees have berries ... but thats another show .. as alton used to say ...

Do I see long thorns?

I though I saw thorns as well so was going to suggest Crateagus or hawthorn.

Thanks, just found out it is a holly tree, American Holly tree maybe. The red berries that the tree produce later in the year look like winterberries.

Yes, i thought it looked like hawthorn but then I saw pictures and remembered that the leaves were like hollies with winterberries. There’s no leaves now.

Both American and English holly are evergreen. So it's not either of those.

If it died from the cold, then it would no longer be evergreen.

Someone could probably id it now if you’d show buds and twigs. Also if you’d tell us if we’re right about seeing long thorns on it that would be helpful. If it was an evergreen killed by cold I’d expect mummified foliage or the ground to be carpeted with dead leaves.

Also, if it had berries it must have had flowers. Can you describe them?

It's also very rare for a broadleaved evergreen shrub or tree to lose ALL its foliage after a single winter cold event. Typically they will persist for weeks to months before they finally fall off. If in fact they ever do so completely.

I doubt this tree was ever evergreen, dead or not.

The trunks are similar to Yaupon holly - however additional description would more likely be possumhaw holly (I. decidua). Can't see leaves well in photo, but those on the common 'Warren's Red' cultivar seem to run larger than the species - so might match.

Could be Yaupon Holly, they are sold here. American Holly not so common. Husband trying to revive the tree. He’s going to put fertilizers. Hopefully, if the tree come back, we can see the leaves. We recall it looked like a holly. But all the leaves are gone.

We have other holly variety, not quite sure of the look of the leaves for this particular tree. Definitely red berries, look like winterberries late in the year. It is possible it is Yaupon Holly.

Ferts won’t hep. It will either bud out or it won’t,
