We are in the first steps of building and would appreciate all ideas/advice on how to delineate the kitchen area from living room. We are planning on having a wine/cabinet area on wall in kitchen (blue) There will be some type of built ins beside fireplace. It would probably look odd to extend the built in cabinets across that wall to the wine cabinet area? Thinking we should add a short wall on each side of kitchen (yellow), run a rustic beam across kitchen ceiling and down the two walls or put narrow metal glass dividers (photo) When you enter the kitchen from the foyer I didn't want to obstruct the view to the back outdoor area. Also, hubby thinks we should turn to have island seating facing kitchen sink window. I'm willing to compromise and have 2 stools on each side of corner of island. Thanks for any/all feedback!

Where is the main entry? Is it by the stairs at the bottom of the photo? If so, from entering the house, guests would go through the kitchen to reach the greatroom? In that case, I would not delineate the kitchen in the way you are showing. I think it would make more sense to delimitate a hallway that leads to the great room, something in line with the wall next to fridge. Would you be able to push your kitchen out to the right in line with the dining room wall?

I avoid beams terminating into another beam or header without a column below, it helps to keep costs down a bit.

@tira_misu Yes, main door is at bottom of stairs off of porch. We looked at pushing kitchen in line with dining room wall but that really made a big 'box' and an even more 'open' plan. Plus, we would lose the porch. There is a foyer so you can not see into the house from front door. We did try different designs for entering but felt ok with this as it is a 'casual' feel home by a lake and many will enter from the backyard I'm sure! I will look at lengthening that fridge wall tho to keep your eye going to the great room - thanks for the suggestion :)
