Looks like a happy Hosta. I guess the moral of the story is never give up, but I think I would have at that point. I've got stuff I want to pull out of the ground that just doesn't look as good this spring to replace with potted stuff that is going great.

I don’t know if perseverance is what it was, more like benign neglect. It was toiling away in my land of misfit plants. I felt like the Dread Captain Robert’s quote every year, “Good night, sleep well. I’ll most likely kill you in the morning.”

So is there a better time of year to divide? I don’t know that I’ve ever intentionally divided my hostas. Usually it was when something happened that required I move a plant, so it would get divided because it was convenient.

Here is a pic I found from 3 years ago. This is how it looked the entire time I had it, until now.

If you go back several generations and trace the crosses, you will discover that this one has longipes in it's background. Longipes is a species, and is found in mainly mountainous areas of Japan. So you have brought the mountain hosta back to it's natural habitat.
