The windows are not right for shutters. So I would remove them.

Yes, definitely remove the shutters. Are your window frames paintable? The bright white looks too stark in contrast to the red brick, so if possible I would go with something more creamy or light taupe. Also pay attention to the undertones in your roof and brick, because I think it might be hard to find a gray that doesn't clash with the roof. Also, if you keep the siding a lighter color than the brick, it will keep your house from looking too top-heavy. And finally, for the future, how about some tlc for your entrance? Things that come to mind are new, beefier wooden step railings, a bush or small narrow tree on either side of the steps, and a bigger porch light.

I have some brick on my lower level as well and I just repainted the house last year. I did a nice creamy white and kept my shutters but repainted them a brick shade to match with the bricks on the lower level. Repainted my front door a subdued gold to give it a pop of color. I love the color combo! I definitely would NOT use ANY blue. There’s a house I know that did blue with the brick and it looks ugly to me. If you don’t want white, the lighter green HERB GREEN that Houston suggested would look very nice too. Good luck!

My favs are the sages or roycroft bronze green ( I love darker houses!).

I would unify the look by painting the brick the same color as the house. As it is right now, it looks like a brick body with an oversized "hat" on top. Painting the brick would diminish that disparity.

Paint all white even brick have dark shutters like dark gray or black and pop the door color to orange or Tiffany blue or red You can always go on Pintrest and find a house for inspiration

Paint the house one color brick and all. Take off the shutters to make it more modern. A pale grey would look good with the reddish roof

BeverlyFLADeziner, we used your color scheme (top picture) for the exterior of my MIL's house put up for sale. Her house's roof was also a rusty red and the brick was nearly identical to that of the OP.

I've always thought that red brick looks good with a dark charcoal grey. I think your house would look amazing with the charcoal grey on top, lose the shutters, paint the white trim around window charcoal grey and then add a pop of colour to your garage door. Good luck!

I agree with the comments to use a lighter color on the top. The darker colors on top make the house look top heavy. I would think twice before painting the brick. Once you paint it, it will require more maintenance than the natural brick. I would also lose the shutters. They just emphasize the shortness of the windows.

Am I the only one who likes shutters? The house looks so much colder to me without them. To me the garage should be whatever paint color you choose. The white garage brings too much attention to it.

L, yes you are the only one who likes shutters (here). The windows are too squat for shutters. It looks like there is some color variation in your brick. I can see tan bricks - I would pick out the lightest tone in the brick and paint the upper part of the house that color and get new wood stained front and garage door and a great light fixture.

Coming from New England, where many homes from previous centuries are still lived in, I know the purpose of shutters was to literally shut out bad weather, falling branches, etc. Shutters which do not have at least the appearance of being able to cover the windows when closed always look silly to me. I would remove them here. Also, I agree with some commenters that painting the house one color, including the garage door, would make give a more balanced look. Landscaping along along the bottom of the brick, such as flower beds and/or low shrubs, would soften the look of the house. Be sure to carry the planting all the way to the corner of the house next to the garage door. Some trellises leaning against the brick on either side of the two sets of the lower windows could carry color from the flower beds partly up the walls, adding interest and drawing the eye from the garage door. I agree with Lisedv that centering the front door and adding side two window side panels would be ideal. I would tend to use a pale gray for the house with white trim around windows and doors and a colorful front door.

So your house won't look cut in half, I would paint the siding close to the color of the brick. Then paint the trim and garage door in a creamy off-white. Then window grids, shutters, fascia and front door in black. For the final touch, the porch and steps in charcoal gray.

For whatever reasons, she obviously didn't get around to doing it last year. I suspect covid had a lot to do with it. None of us knows what she may have been through in the last year. What is the harm in her having asked again for a fresh look? I don't mean to be harsh to the pros because their time is valuable and their advice on Houzz is much appreciated. I just think there is probably a reason why she posted again.

L. Because she got a ton of help on the last post w/colors and how to change the exterior. A lot of people took the time to comment and help (at least 35 suggestions. how many more does she want?). Why should people have to repeat the same thing?? I mean, there's only so many color recommendations. She's asking the exact same questions w/the same photo, 14 months later.

if she wants more help, then how about prefacing this current post with, " Thanks for the help last year but I don't like A, B, or C, and was hoping someone could suggest something else, such as .........?"

Both Celery and Melissa took a lot of time to photoshop in colors on her picture. That's a lot of time those two spenT!

I think it's rather rude, and a slap in the face to everyone who's taken the time to help.

A lot of lives went on hold during covid. Be a bit kinder, or really do not comment. People lost work last year, and we are not exactly back even yet.

nswiseman, I haven't been the least bit mean. don't tell me to be kinder. I said nothing to her, or nothing that was out of line. I'm not knocking the time issue, I'm knocking the repetitive issue. The covid excuse is irrelevant in response to her question. why would covid affect the color advice she was given a year ago? Do you know how long it takes for Celery or Melissa to mock up those pictures w/different colors? If OP doesn't like the color options given, then let her say what she didn't like about them so that people can offer new help instead of repeating what's already there. My opinion is that it's rude to ask the same question and ignore the people who have already helped. Maybe you should not comment since you fail to grasp this simple concept.

BTW, Not everyone went on hold because of covid. the remodeling business and home sales have exploded. Someone is buying, and someone (a lot of someones) are remodeling.

Maybe she forgot she asked the same question last year, forgot her name (even though it's created under your houzz account w/your real name and email), forgot her email, forgot who she was, created a whole new houzz account, but managed to locate the exact same picture and created a new post w/the same question! yep. that's it. It's been 5 days and it would appear she's forgotten about this one too.

Not sure I agree with you @Diana Bier. Many pros are generously giving good advice which results in a lot of happy endings (with grateful recipients of that advice). In a public square, there are always outliers who either abuse everyone’s generosity or are just undecided people . If this is a repeat question, it’s clear she already got a lot of help before and should reread her own post. But I don’t think all “free” advice is unworthy. You have been very helpful to a lot of people, as have Beth and Jan, and your advice is highly helpful even though it has been free.

And yes, some people are looking for therapy here too.

Hi @RedRyder what I actually meant is that some Houzzers don't value free advice, even if it is good advice, just because they have no "skin in the game," meaning that they haven't paid for it.

I do agree with you that many pros and non-pros do give good free advice, and I thank you for your kind words regarding my advice.

I’m hearing you guys on this discussion as i had started a post for a tiny bathroom layout, but as things turned, we moved the stairs to create a closet because we will demo a closet to make bathroom then i gained new fun space in living room bc the stairs were re directed. I thought several times to create new post but I value everything here on houzz and every pro and non pros help and time and visits for sure. Made some friends along the way, which is cool. I follow a lot of posts and am thankful for everyone here. I imagine the time spent here helping the OP’s is not for not! And, lol, i’ll get to that bathroom one day, hopefully soon, and very thankfully i’ll have the pros and non pros come on and come back to help me, and never will take advantage or disregard any one. I had said many times in the past that it would be nice to be able to ‘pay back’ for the help and fun and enjoyment i receive for being able to be here!

Paint can really make a HUGE difference. We hated the red brick and blah beige when we bought our house and did an addition. We used SW Rockbottom but Urbane Bronze is really HOT right now as well. We get people stopping by all the time making comments etc...on how our corner lot house really POP's now. I've recently pained the door Bright Yellow because I was bored, its fun to play with color accents.

I would paint the brick and the top the same color. I would use a color that is in the white spectrum. But not real white. The shutters can be kept. Paint shutters same color as they will appear slightly darker than rest of the home. Or paint the shutters a color that would match the garage color the same.

I think new03mom has the best plan for paint colors. It would be timeless and if you ever sell the colors will not be off putting to anyone. Don’t pay any mind to the drama going on within your thread. I guess design and drama go hand in hand?
