My garden with fewer roses

... and fewer blooms as well, since the spring flush is fading. Though right on schedule Rambling Rector is just opening the first spray. I love it that this magnificent once bloomer is the last to bloom.

I hesitated to post these since they are past their glory. However, I am still quite happy with the effect of the garden as a whole.

On the left, Cl Mrs Herbert Stevens, just finished, and Pierre de Ronsard to the right. Lots of white foxgloves 'Snow Thimble'. I have white cleome coming up to replace it when the foxgloves are done. The tree is a crape myrtle, not sure which one but I think it is 'Tuscarora', a dark coral pink.

Gertrude Jeckyll with Echeveria imbricata, heuchera 'Old La Rochette', and a random columbine. I planted all kinds of columbines and let them to have at it.

This rose is one of my most fragrant.

Okay, here goes with Part 2

Atmore Larmaque with Cl Lady Hillingdon (almost done) and Ispahan, one of my longest blooming once-bloomers

The Fence garden - an 8 foot black chain length fence that keeps the wildlife out and the dogs in, and also supports fourteen roses. Closest here is Général Galliéni, then Mel Hulse, then Westerland. The fence is not really leaning; that is from the angle of the photo.

And finally Buff Beauty, my "guard rose", keeping me from accidentally tripping backward over a high retaining wall.

I don't know why the photos in this post came with thumbnails instead of bigger pictures like the first one did. I think I did them the same way. However if you click on them, you get the full size picture.

Why did you reduce the numbers of roses, Folly? Not that it doesn't look just GREAT . . . And in fact, individual plants may have more impact. (Your Buff Beauty is gah-juss.)

@jerijen, For some reason I can't link to the post or copy it correctly but there is a Thread called garden takes a blow where it explains why the roses had to be taken out. Basically fire prevention.

Oh deadheading, how I love what deadheading does to a bush, no ugly rose hips and more blossoms, but I HATE doing it. It's like thorns on top of thorns in your arms. I can't imagine pruning your roses @Rosefolly z5 they look so big it is going to be a bit of a pain but it pays off!

Thanks, everyone. I love my garden, too. I's as gratifying as getting compliments on your children.

And I have begun deadheading. I have an occasional helper, and she was working with me for hours yesterday. The front of the garden is looking fresher and when we move to the back next week, it will do the same. Some years I never get around to deadheading the back fence until the middle of summer, which cuts into the repeat.

Your newly reduced garden is absolutely beautiful! You have done an amazing job of whittling down your collection, creating a practical fire break and maintaining a sense of abundance and romantic magic!! I have been feeling for everyone in CA as you all persevere through longer periods of hot, dry weather and other consequences of global warming. We got a good dose up here in OR, too, with areas burning that have been lush for ages, massive evacuations and lots of toxic smoke.

I applaud your indomitable and creative rose gardening spirit! I am joining the ranks of whittlers, too. A number of circumstances have piled up over the last 10 years, and between those and climate shifts, I decided to unload lots of potted roses and thin my shoehorned beds. I garden on a microscopic lot, so plants were really packed into my beds and pot nursery! I am passing along all but my absolute favs and my “preservation and propagation roses”—Gallicas and such. It is interesting to discover which roses one values above others, isn’t it? I surprised myself a few times. For example, I learned that I absolutely adore MB/Jacques Cartier and made certain that it remained in my garden.
