I live in an apartment building and the tenants were told that the gas radiators will be pulled out and replaced with PTACs, one per room. Each PTAC will look like a window air conditioner (ac) and supply both air conditioning and heat. I’m not sure if it will be a window ac unit with electric heat or a window ac with electric heat and heat pump.

The owners of the apartment building have decided that repairing the gas pipes or installing a mini-split system are not options.

I’ve heard that window unit PTACs are noisy and am hoping that there is a way to find out which brands/models are known to be quieter. Any thoughts on how to get that information?

Although I’m a tenant I would consider buying my own window units if there is such a thing as units known to be significantly quieter than average. However, I’m also concerned as I’ve heard window PTACs tend to be expensive but only last about 5 years at most. My apt is small: two rooms, each one ~ 340 sq. feet.
