I'd use recessed lights in the ceiling, with or without a light over the mirror, and then add sconces to the side walls, which will give you the best lighting for a vanity.

My son had the same issue in his master bath. We put in a recessed LED pot light centered on the ceiling over the vanity. Then we put in hanging lights, like they use for kitchen islands, on either side of the mirror. It’s great for putting on makeup, and the hanging lights can be found in lots of styles to fit your decor.

I would avoid recessed lights for a make-up area. They are good for task lighting on horizontal surfaces such as kitchen counters, but they will create a very harsh light and shadows on your face, which is an uneven vertical surface. If you are in a location with recessed lights, look at people’s faces and notice the shadows created by the recessed lighting. It’s not flattering on the face, and as a lifelong make-up user, I believe it will make it more difficult to apply make-up.

The recessed lights are for general lighting in the entire bathroom, not just above your head at the mirror. The side sconces give you the right light for applying makeup.

The vertical sconces are great on either side of the mirror. I put in a full wall mirror with three sconces. The light is great, no shadows and no regrets.
