Are birch trees low maintenance in zone 5?

5 years ago

I'm replacing an ash tree thats half dead and looking for something that gets maybe 30-40 ft tall and about the same or less wide and fairly fast growing so i can get some shade on the house. I was thinking a birch or honey locust, I kind of like the dappled light because my yard is fairly dark and damp right now. I like the look of birches better but have read mixed things about hardiness/disease and insect problems, any feed back or suggestions?
