First Daylilies and May Flowers

Kiss of Paradise is the first of my established daylilies to bloom - just like the previous two years. It opened yesterday, one day earlier than last year.

This is Lightning Round, a new Spring acquisition that's growing in a pot. The first flower tried - and failed- to open five days ago when the nights were just too cold. This is the second bloom. It's a near white with a pink base. When it's mature, it's supposed to have 7-inch flowers. This one was under 6.

Here's my Rockin' Red dianthus with some Heucheras.

A rose pink dianthus with a heavenly scent. I don't remember the name.

Lovely photos! Rockin' Red dianthus is great! I need to look for some of that. The pink one is luscious too. Kiss of Paradise looks like it might be first here among the named varieties. Lightning Round is nice especially if it eventually gets to that 7 inch size. I love the iris and clematis too--such beautiful colors!

Kiss of Paradise is always so pretty. And I like Lightning Round-my kind of bloom, you know!! I have had the same problem with Wonder of it All and Wonders Never Cease-cool nights have just made it difficult for blooms to fully open. I may have a decent bloom on WNC today.

Glad to see your season starting-love the red dianthus- I need to look for that red! Oh and that iris too! Great blooms on it.

Lightening Round is a pretty near white. If you don't have something like your Henryi Clematis to compare it too, you would think of it as almost true white. I had to keep this in mind when planting some white annuals/ perennials close to Joan Senior. As white as Joan Is, it's not the same white as other types of plants..............I like the flat face of Kiss of Paradise. Looks like a huge flower in the picture...............Maryl

Lovely photo of Kiss Of Paradise. Looking forward to seeing how Lightening Round does once it goes in the ground. Always a pleasure seeing your photos both daylily and others.

Maryl - Lightning Round is not as white as I would like. With the first blooms, it's more of a cream. Arctic Lace, Last Snowflake and Believe in Angels are much whiter. It's certainly nowhere as white as Heavenly Snow White. I'll wait and see what subsequent blooms look like, but I wasn't wowed by this bloom. Kiss of Paradise does have a huge bloom - at least 7 inches in diameter.

Julia - I don't know that Lightning Round will earn a place planted in the ground. As I told Maryl above, I think the near whites I already had are better. I bought several new plants because I thought I wanted to hybridize with them. I may just make seed and sell them in the fall or next year.

Kate and Hoosier Nan - Rockin' Red Dianthus is a wonderful perennial that I highly recommend. Unlike most dianthus that just bloom in the Spring, Rockin' Red blooms from Spring to late Fall.

Debra, all your blooms are lovely. I like that Kiss of Paradise. It is a lovely and fully open bloom with good colors. a Nice start to the season. Thos deep blue iris are beauties too.

It’s great to see your blooming starting! I have Henri clematis, it just started blooming. And hurray! I found a scape today on Spectral Elegance.

Kiss of Paradise is gorgeous, I love daylilies that open flat like that. Lightning Flash is lovely too. I have several similar looking ones. I want to get rid of a couple, but they all perform quite well making it very hard for me. Although a 7" flower would make a difference.

Your dianthus is so pretty. I stopped in the nursery section of the store the other day to look for dianthus, and they had none. Usually they have the biennial and perennial versions. They know I want it.
