Plywood boxes are in no way superior to MDF and if you want painted cabinets for sure MDF doors are superior to wood . Maybe a bit more info from you will help. I will say I have been using Ikea full overlay / frameless cabinets for 20 + yrs in my design biz have had them myself for a bit longer and they are particle board boxes with MDF doors and in all that time I have had one warranty issue and it was solved in store in 10 mins I would suggest you check them out I love the warranty and the fact that Ikea is very environmentally conscious. Off gassing is honestly not an issue by the time the cabinets are shipped and installed

Thanks for the feedback, Patricia. Ive actually used ikea cabinets and was happy with them. That’s why I knew I wanted frameless with this remodel. I installed the ikea cabinets in a previous home and lived with them for about five years. They held up well during that time. My concern now is both for the longevity/durability and also off gassing of MDF boxes. I was less concerned with these things ten years ago when we used ikea :)

The only issue we had with the ikea cabinet boxes is one of the screws in our trash pullout cabinet came loose. I have read about MDF screws coming loose and no longer holding a screw. This is part is the longevity/durability concern I have, along with swelling and potential water damage.

The Eclipse cabinets I am considering use MDF boxes and wood doors. My cabinets will be painted. I have read about MDF doors and fronts being preferred by some for painted finishes, but I haven’t heard much positive about MDF box construction over plywood. Most people say that plywood is preferred and I would think the upgrade cost associated with plywood would confirm this. It is reassuring to hear that you are pleased with the performance of MDF, though. I know there is not always one clear answer. Thanks!
