Samaras..2 sets falling?

The ancient maple tree usually sends down 1 set of green wings each May. This year it sent down these HUGE dried brown split halved wings beginning in April and going through May. This week((May 24) they are starting to send down the little green double wings. The pollen in New England is very high this year. Can someone explain what is happening ?
