Exterior paint advice needed !

last modified: 4 years ago

We are about to paint our exterior, two windows have very wide trim, totally unlike the others. I now see that's why previous owners used same paint for siding and trim. I would like to use a trim color (probably woodsy green or gray siding paint with red accents and door) but don’t want two big cream colored boxes where those windows are ruining the look, any suggestions? Do we just not use trim around those 2? Or no window trim at all?

My other issue is that the windows themselves are a beige/light gray, which I think will have an impact on use of trim. Color suggestions welcome - really struggling as house is beautiful and don't want to mess it up.

The pic is pretty fuzzy but is it not possible to add trim to the other windows or remove the trim from these .As for red accents IMO only the front door and amybe the furniture on the porch . I also think white suits the house so I wouldneed to see your color chice for the siding and what you plan for the trim.

Can you re post a clearer picture of what you mean by extra trim on the circled windows? Also...am I correct that there are three downspouts around the upper window and draining on your front roof? Two on the left, and one on the right? This seems rather complicated to me. Can your gutters/downspouts be re configured? This might simplify the “lines” of your home.

You do have a beautiful home. I really like the gray vlue/green door with the lower part of the posts painted to match, but I wouldn't do this if I were choosing a vibrant front door color. It would be too much.

With a red door I would probably do the lower posts in a gray that coordinates with the roof. The top rail of the fence could also be gray or black.

I love red, but I am loving your white home and am struggling with the red door choice. Will you take away from the simply beauty that you have now. Could you do a color on the porch floor and ceiling with a coordinated door color and lower post color to bring more color to your space?

I am envisioning something like this with either a blue door (the color of the flowers) or a green door (the color of the tables)

or something like this with a more neutral floor and the door and patio ceiling in a green/blue

Maybe something like this ceiling color on the ceiling and floor with a light yellow door.

This is one of my favorite white homes. Has just a bit of wood to offset the white

Thank you so much! I actually agree that the house is probably meant to be white (right now it's sort of a dirty light gray), and I've been struggling with that because I love color. I really like the idea of painting the porch ceiling a different color. I also never thought about painting the entire lower posts a color if we kept the house all-white. IF we did something like the photo below, which i love--the more creamy white, do you think I could get away with some color on the lower posts? Someday I'd like to replace them with bare wood, but not ready to do so yet. I really appreciate your insights!

I agree that white would be the best option. I’d use color on the door. Your current door looks nice and doesn’t seem like it needs replacing.
Love the idea of a blue ceiling.

Thank you all so much. Also, here is a photo of the "big box" vs normal windows which caused the initial trim issue. And a current, more clear photo of house. My thought is if we stick with white, something creamy like SW alabaster. And yes, it's WAY overdue for painting - I've stalled for 5 years since we moved in because I'm SO bad at this :)
