n2hostas, sounds like you did some good feeding for hostas.

I use 20% ammonia to water in a hand or pump sprayer to spray on all the leaves and around the base to kill the slugs. I haven't had to use it for years since we quit bringing in truckloads of mulch. We saw millions of slugs when shoveling mulch into wheelbarrow.

Now we buy bagged cedar chips. No bugs and easier to handle. The cedar probably works as somewhat of a repellent.

Wow, what a lot of work! I don’t have voles.....just slugs and I drench them twice a year every year with glee!!! Pandora, with mulch, what do you have around your hostas to hold moisture? I am in the city so, that’s all I have really. I planted some beautiful ajuga thinking that would be better then mulch.......just as bad and aggressive to boot. I yanked it out after 3 years!

The "cool one" is called Copperhead... made by my local brewery... I like to buy local, hosta and beer. :)

Bagged cedar chips... I will consider it. Stella, my cat, got two voles in one day... she cleaned out the neighbors yard last year... I am encouraging to be MY garden helper or else bring in income from the neighbors.

We have cleaned them out of Hosta Alley, but at least two other sections need vole control.

Gee Pandora, the page didn’t come up, but my local Lowes had pallets and pallets stacked all along the back of the parking lot......go figure.

n2hostas, may I suggest another cat? Then Stella wouldn’t have to do all the work!

djacob, Thanks for update on cedar chips. They probably just don't have everything in website. We will cross our fingers when we remulch in 22 or 23.

Wish i could rent a good mouser cat for a while. :) I wonder if shelters would like a side business. "Rent mousers to nice hosta growers only" lol

Debra, we have Jensen But he is scared cat.... He wants to hunt...but he is scared cat. Maybe Stella trains him... but he is very good inside the house.. Outside...meh...
