My guess is mulberry.

Agree about red mulberries. The ripe ones are edible, and very healthy. Unripe ones will cause intestinal distress and are mildly hallucinogenic. Pokeweed berries look similar, but the leaves look quite different. Those are mildly toxic.

poke weed seeds look nothing like a mulberry ... https://duckduckgo.com/?t=ffcm&q=poke+weed&iax=images&ia=images

i hate this time of year.. as the birds baptize my house and car with purple poops.. for a month ...

i find the texture revolting ... but my ex and kids would die for them ... who are those people ... lol ..

True that pokeweed berries don't look a "lot" like mulberries, especially when mature. But when half-mature - purple, but not expanded out with each berry on a small stem, they can look similar. As in "something like". See the photo in this reference - https://www.horseillustrated.com/ten-plants-toxic-to-horses. I knew someone who scarfed them thinking they were some kind of raspberries. They ended up getting their stomach pumped.

First of all Pokeweed is a herbaceous perennial and Mulberry is a tree. Very unlikely anybody could confuse one with another.

The confusion I noted was with raspberries or blackberries. Not that smart, but not entirely off-base.

I agree that pokeweed and mulberries, raspberries or blackberries look nothing alike, but then I think most of us here are familiar with various kinds of berries and plants. It's hard to imagine someone not knowing the difference, but I'm never too surprised by the ignorance of some folks. It's a learning curve.

That said, just did a quick image search and I think I see now what Dan is referring to - there must be more than one variety of pokeweed.

What I'm familiar with:

From a WI website:

And if anyone here has spent any time on the 'Name That Plant' forum, they might be familiar with the numerous requests for unknown plant IDs that turn out to be pokeweed 😄

so yall saying I shouldnt eat the unripe mulberries? Heck this year I got a lil smart and put tarps around the tree. NOW DO I have to remove the stems before saving any? My fingernails are stined fro doing so.

thanks all
