Siding, No Siding

I really want to remove the siding on our house. I'm just not sure what is underneath it. How can I find out with destroying the ugly siding? Should I keep it, paint it, or ditch it?

Do you know how old that part of thenhouse is? it kind of looks like an addition.

"Should I keep it, paint it, or ditch it?"

I don't see anything wrong but it's your house so if you don't like it I don't know why you should keep it.

Keep it. What don't you like about it? Might want to spend the money on landscaping instead.

I would bet that anything you find under it will NOT be better. This is neat, clean, modern, a nice color that goes well with the brick.

It looks like a dormer type addition to me, and I would imagine, just sheathing underneath that siding. I dont see anything wrong with it. It looks fine to me. It will never survive removing and reinstalling, so if you remove, you need to be prepared to purchase all new siding.

I would leave it. The color might not be to your liking, but it actually goes quite well with the red brick and the roof.

I would agree. it could be an addition, and their might not be any other siding underneath. if you want to replace it, go ahead but if that is vynal siding they make a tool you could easily enough take some loose to see what is underneath.

You could change color of the siding more to your liking. However, if it is vynal siding it might not hold paint very well. You could also paint the brick. Paint will not stay on brick forever and would need to be cleaned off possibly by sand blasting and repainted over time. Looks like a door was removed and then bricked resulting in having new brick color next to older original brick color. Removing clutter and landscaping would help a lot.

You've got a horrific brick repair and you're worried about siding. I don't get it.

I hope this is the back of the house! What does the front look like? Maybe you're asking if you should side over the brick and I might say "Yes," if i saw all of the house.

So I'm thinking this might be an addition as well. We've only lived here for 5 years now. So I don't know the history of the house. We are looking to have the brick pointed up, repaired and possibly painted. I love painted brick houses. We want to use masonry paint such as Romabio. I was hoping there was brick under that siding. The patio needs work too. I was hoping to either get pavers installed or just get a new concrete patio plus get the window wells updated but one project at a time.

Can you see the siding from the front of the house?

Pic of the Front of the House. It has the same yellowish siding. I don't like the color even though it goes great with the roof and red brick. I'm thinking a creamy white or light grey. We have invested in our landscaping recently with a new privacy fence and new sod in the backyard. The grass was dead in the backyard. This is a major improvement.

I might suggest one other improvement in the back. A trellis, or a big outside painting etc, over that area where the old door was. Since the brick is not the same color, it really sticks out and not in a great way. Something to camouflage that would be very nice

What's the budget? You could rip off the siding and see what's under it, if you have the money to replace it with nice James Hardie siding. Then Romabio can match the siding with the exact white you need for the brick.

This house has a similar reddish roof to yours and has warm taupe siding. You can paint the vinyl. Note the trim paint is a gold color, not white.

Another color that harmonizes well with brick and red roof is sage:

Keep the red brick. It suits the house, the roof harmonizes. Just go a warm taupe or sage green and spend your money on further landscaping in back--beds with a mix of high and low shrubs along your new fencing would give you a green oasis back there.

Seeing the front of the house, i wouldnt paint the brick. its really cute as is, but the back is a little unfortunate. To your original question, id replace tbe siding with something paintable like wood or Hardie plank.

It looks like an addition. At any rate, there is no brick under it for sure.

So I've been looking at James Hardie siding since this post...I'm super excited to renew it with new updated siding. I will definitely change the color. As far as the brick is concerned, not sure how to make that better in the back of the house. Would just painting that part of the house like an accent wall be weird looking? Need help with that brick wall.

It would look weird to just paint the one rear brick wall. Perhaps you could talk to a few mason to see if theymcould repoint the bricks with a mortor that matches the rest of the house better. If not, the suggestion earlier or using a vine plant is a hood way to hide it

Its only one spot on the back. A nice trellis, with pots attached to it, for flowers (fake or real), is all you need. Its very inexpensive and easy to take care of that problem.
