Is your new lawn? ready for its first mowing? Your weed crop is going to depend on your seed bank and the amount of water added.

Are the weeds newly germinated annuals (mow over) or regrowing perennials (pull)?

Please do not pull the weeds. You may disturb the new grass seedlings. Address the weeds when the grass matures. In the fall you can spread a fall weed and feed product; I always use Scott’s products for lawn care. I also suggest that you read up on articles on establishing a newly seeded lawn. I use Scott’s weed and feed products twice a year ( spring and fall) and have had years of a beautiful weed free healthy lawn❣️

I have found it depends on what the weeds are. My non biological definition is there are two types. One category are the violets, foreign grasses, etc. The other is the broad leaf weeds like thistles, dandelions, etc. Those in category one can be controlled by mowing, they rarely become a big problem. Something like the violet produce flowers in the spring and disappear after blooming and mowing.

The broad leafs do not compete, they cover the area of ground and push out all other plants. They must be dug out or use a broad leaf weed killer on them. If the broad leaf weeds are numerous the only thing to do is use a broad leaf weed killer. I do it once or twice per year depending how prolific they are. If you have a couple of broad leaf weeds in several hundred sqft, then I dig them out. Since your grass is new I would dig out what I can and when the grass is established I would use the broad leaf weed killer

To dig them out I use what I call a weed hoe, It is on a handle about 3.5 feet long with a blade that is about 1.5 inches wide. It is sort of like a short spear. I find pushing it in so it cuts the root which will generally eliminate the plant. After the root is cut, I lift the plant out of the ground. The traditional horse shoe shaped weed hoes are over kill for broad leafs
