tell us about your source ... bigbox.. or a hosta nursery??? ... what im getting at is how exotic or conversely.. how old the ID may be ... there are a couple old standard for 1 ... the names of which are escaping me right now ...

in other words.. can we rule out the newest ones ... that only a high end nursery might have [and where you would expect proper labeling]

tj, your guess fits when you look at the HL photos for SEF. Ken, I don't think that's a golden Tiara.....it has no margin....unless the margin fades in some instances that I am unaware of.......which is entirely possible, I'm sure! lol

Ken, you are correct, I am a newbie on Hostas - I had to have something to do during the pandemic last year with no sports for about 6 months during the spring so I bought a lot of Hostas online. I should know to call them divisions not bulbs, but I am still learning the terminology. By the way, the first one was bought from Holland Bulb Farm last year. The others most likely from a Big Box store or from a local garden center here in MS. Our local garden stores seldom have more than 5 or 6 kinds and I don't usually see any "exotic" ones although in the last few years I am seeing more different kinds.

I have June and Grand (and Golden) Tiara, so I know that that is not correct. I'll look up St. Elmos fire to see what it looks like.

utog, your guesses are good too. How did you get so accurat? I thought you had only been collecting hohostas for 4-5 years?

The difference between GS and VC is the flower. GS has a deep purple flower, whereas VC has light lavendar one. So Ed bloom time may give you your answer between those two. I think utog’s ID of Orange Marmalade is correct.

#3 could be Orange Marmalade. If you'll look at the Orange Marmalade photos #5 and #7 in the hosta library, you'll see where it got it's name. That color doesn't last too long, and it doesn't hold up that well, but it's striking in the early spring. Phil, one of our now departed folks, had the phrase, "it's worth how it looks in the summer for how good it looks in the spring", referring to Orange Marmalade. Otherwise, it's probably Paul's Glory. Paul's Glory held up very well for me even in Texas.

#2 is almost certainly Golden Scepter, the next best guess would be Golden Spades, but that is not found in many gardens. Gold Drop and Gold Edger are both larger, with thicker leaves, and a slightly duller golden coloring.

Thanks for the help. So the 2nd is either Golden Scepter or Vanilla Cream (they both look similar). On the third, I already have Orange Marmalade and Paul's Glory, but only got them this year, so as they get bigger, hopefully, I will know for sure. Thanks again everybody!

Just to throw some other names out there.

1 - Platinum Tiara if it stays small. Delta Dawn or Sunshine Glory if it gets medium. Frozen Margarita if it gets big and fragrant.

3. Gold Standard
