Living room decor

Hi! We are finalizing our living room decor and we got a rug with a distressed pattern. My question is if this is too much and I should get a solid color rug, or if the current rug actually works well with the rest of the decor.
Just a few points of clarification- we still have to hang the picture over the couch; the chairs are a plum color (a tad darker than the purple cushions but look much darker in the pics); and sorry for the mess in one of the bookcases- we still have some work in progress in the area. I’m adding a close up of the bookcase since the pattern there is not easy to see from a distant picture, but you can definitely see it as you enter the room in person
Thanks in advance!

I am not sure if rug belongs to this room. I would get rug that works better with your sofa, chairs and wall art.

I would way upsize the rug and do something with a larger pattern and bolder colors.

Thanks! @celery ! When you say a rug that goes better with the rest of the decor, which type of rug are you thinking of?

Here is a rug close up, for some reason it didn’t upload before

I do agree the rug is not night enough. It looks like your going for an eclectic look. Haven't landed on it yet but the art is what is throwing off the room for me (besides the rug needing to be bigger)

    Something like this maybe: https://www.etsy.com/listing/726360521/large-abstract-painting-modern-abstract?gpla=1&gao=1&&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_us_a-art_and_collectibles-painting-acrylic&utm_custom1=k_CjwKCAjwqvyFBhB7EiwAER786RHgS_49tY3PR__ryoosZLdoGbL7uvF9wGbsiu7_R7dbhF5Z01vD5hoCcQ4QAvD_BwE_k&utm_content=go_12569400370_114708220970_507438025628_pla-353975737629_m__726360521_140293482&utm_custom2=12569400370&gclid=CjwKCAjwqvyFBhB7EiwAER786RHgS_49tY3PR__ryoosZLdoGbL7uvF9wGbsiu7_R7dbhF5Z01vD5hoCcQ4QAvD_BwE

Some options to go with multi color rug to tie up colors

  • PRO

If not with multi then with neutral one

Thanks @Celery! I like the second option

Thanks @Lisa Caudill! The issue with the size is that if I go bigger with the rug it will be too close to the fireplace, not leaving enough space for people to circulate

Regarding size... I guess I could also move the rug a bit forward vs pushing it against the wall behind the couch, as it currently is

If you're able to, please return those paintings. They're doing absolutely nothing for your room... My 0.02 cents.

The rug doesn't need to be against the wall, ring it a bit forward, your size might not be that off. However, the rug needs to be either a bit more dramatic or more neutral. It reads pink in some photos, throwing off the whole look. Maybe look for something with hints of deep turquoise and neutrals, but not all hit you over the head turquoise rug.
The artwork is wrong, again needs a bit more presence/drama/happiness.
Good luck! You have a great start!

The 2 chairs by the window look like dining chairs, the scale is off. They should be replaced with more substantial chairs with a pattern. Also agree with moving rug away from wall at least 18 inches, only front legs need to be on the rug.

Pull the rug so it is under the front 1/3 - 1/2 of the straight seats on the sofa. Still think it will be too small, but you can't cover the vent (??) in the floor opposite. Leggy furniture needs to sit entirely on the rug, IMO. The plum chairs look more appropriate for a game table. The armchair should angle at the non-chaise side of the sofa. Have you considered splitting up the four bookcases so two flank the windows where the plum chairs are? Four of them look to be crowding the door. You might also put all four of them on the sofa wall and float the sofa with its back to the door. Need to see the wall opposite the sofa. Is that the TV wall and exactly where vents and outlets are,so you can integrate some lamps.

To my eye, the floral pillows and art piece read gramma vs.. modern in a dissonant way. The rug is less of a problem. I would make more connection between gray(?) chair , couch, and rug.

If I were you, I'd find a rug I adored and let that inform the room's palette more. Good advice on scooting a rug this size forward. Right now, to my amateur eye, white walls make the room look unfinished and four bookcases around the door choke the entry. The floral cushions are meh (too small, too busy) imo but throw cushions are the cherry on top. They can easily be switched out (or fun covers found). You might want to play around with the furniture layout on graph paper to see what makes the most sense for how you live in this space. Is there a TV facing the couch? How does that wall look and would bookcases on that wall fit and make sense? Once you have your layout down, decor will finish the room. Art is personal so my advice is to always choose something that truly makes your heart SING.

This is nice room it just needs rearranging. A more striking rug, and better art. Bbl

Here are some pics with natural light- the rug is definitely not pinkish as it might have looked like in other pics. The door in between the bookcases leads to a sun room. The opening at the left of the couch is the entrance (where the foyer is) and the opening on the right leads to the kitchen.
There’s a chimney in front of the couch. Above the chimney we will hang a Samsung framed tv, so that it doesn’t have a tv look when it’s off.
We don’t have anything on the walls yet since we recently moved. I already owned the art over the coach (not hanged yet) and thought it could work here (hanging it on the wall at the right height) since it has teal colors and beiges which go well with the couch color and gold details in the space.
Thanks everyone for the advice and opinions!

Two quick mock ups. Gotta run to appoint. I will explain later!

So, the rug can come to within 12" of the hearth, so try pulling it to there first. I don't think it is the right rug for the space, but you'll be able to see how the furniture looks with it adjusted. The only pieces I would keep here are the sofa, coffee table, arm chair and the two plum chairs. Get a small game table to put with them. I'm not a fan of TV over the fireplace. have you ever considered it on the sofa wall and floating the sofa perpendicular to the fireplace?

Your chairs are definitely for a table, so if there's no dining table, try a small game table with them in front of the window to their left.

I am back. First, the rug. Neutral with some tones that work with your sofa. Then you can go soft or strong with the art. Art is very personal so get on www.greatbigcanvas.com and hunt around. I like the idea of separating the bookcases and flanking each side wall with them. We can style them once you have gotten big pieces where they work best. I put a few stacks of books just to create some visual dimension. Hope that helps you understand my logic. Feel free to ask questions.

I dont have advice, sorry. i just really like your couch! Would you mind sharing where its from or what it is?

Thanks so much @Flo Mangan! For taking time in your suggestions. I really like these rugs, one of my challenges with the rug is that I have little ones, so need it ti be washable.
I’ll definitely take a look into the web you shared. Thanks!

I doubt it, but seems a mix-in -- with postage trunk, with colors in your art....D 31.5" / H 47.24" :) as though art over the window, flat.

I wonder what's thought of this texture for the windows?

Idk if I 'vote for' the trunk's leathery brown frame... when there's other looks going, lighter.

Your rug? distressed/ faded might be just fine without 'heavy'...

Thanks @everdebz I already ordered curtains, but since are semi under construction, we haven’t install them yet

Your fireplace looks great! What a great focal point. I worry the TV above it would be too high for comfortable viewing but then I'm at a loss as to the optimal spot for the TV with the sectional. Seating perpendicular to a TV makes doesn't make for the most comfortable viewing at my house. Really depends on how you use the space. Maybe you'll have a better idea after living in your new home for a bit longer.

As Flo suggested, I'd consider the bookcases on the window wall instead of around the sunroom entry and perhaps making that end a play area for the little ones. Speaking of, take advantage of your resident artists!! :D Thoughtfully framing their best pieces can save you a fortune on wall decor, not to mention enliven your home with personal touches that will make you smile every day.

Sure hope you ditch the art, your sofa is beautiful, it deserves something far more interesting, like Flo's first piece.

@Flo Mangan - if possible, could you pls share the link for the first art work in your design? I looked into the link you shared but couldn’t find this one. Thanks in advance!

Here it is. From Greatbigcanvas and I chose the black with gold detail floating frame for it. Measure length of back of sectional and choose size that is about 2/3 width of that back. The name of the piece is: Purple Haze wall art by Ron Di Scenza.

I would like to update your fireplace styling. I would paint the gold trim black flat finish or dark gray. Then a different approach to the mantel decor. Brb

  • PRO

Something like this. Since your ceiling is fairly low, I would lean a couple of black and white prints overlapped in center of mantel. Then add a couple small carved birds or pots and that’s all. If you don’t want to paint your gold surround, then add a similar gold accessory to mantel and once more in the room. An inspiration photo.

Or if you like surrounding yourself with art, could try the canvas over mantel. New one over sofa.
