They will eat anything they find, they aren't that fuzzy if that is what's available to them.. this year, the beetles are even eating my pepper plants, which usually has never happened in my garden.. try neem oil, it's most effective pesticide that sticks to leaves when leaves get wet from rain, just be sure to spray both top and underside of the leaves. buy a concentrate that way you can adjust the amount.

it slows them down, definitely wont stop them if they're hungry or if its an army of them. i think diatomaceous earth is far more effective for critters, but conditions must be dry. they won't crawl anywhere near it, but it's more difficult to apply.. i did find that because its so fine, it can be suspended in water and sprayed on.. it wont be effective until the water evaporates, leaving the DE behind.
