Pruning Poinsettia

I tried to prune a poinsettia in the past, and it ended up like the last picture. I have four new ones that need pruning. Can I cut back all the leaves? Should I? I did read about it, but when I pruned that last one it never grew leaves from any of the other nodes. Help!
