Jason, is it the bloom stems that are so long/tall? If so, they should shrivel and fall off soon. Then your plant will grow more foliage and bloom again next spring.

prune half.. leave half .. and find out.. and i bet you remember what happened for the rest of your life ..

and lay the cuttings on a tray of moist media.. and see if they root ...

and in a few weeks shoot us some pix of how the plant reacted to the half pruning ...

i think you might have a beast in a small pot .... it might need to end up at the base of the birdbath in mother earth .... as it has a slight bent toward world domination ...

the upside is.. its easy to rip out when it covers too much ground.. as its barely rooted into the soil anyway ...

@Tiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL, you're right, it was bloom stems that had gotten so long and out of control. Several of them were already drying up and falling off, so I could have probably been patient and it would have solved itself.

@ken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5, I had a pot full of potting soil that was sitting around unused, so I put the cuttings there to see what happens. If they come back, great! If not, no big deal as I wasn't planning on them, anyway. If they do, though, then I might do something like @KW PNW Z8, that looks awesome!

I bought a pot of this several years ago and it didn't do well at all, so I really had low expectations! But I've learned a lot since then, so there's a good chance that it was in the wrong soil or had too much water.

Only down side for the day, a dang yellow jacket stung me on the EAR as I was finishing up!! Ticked me off, I'm so gentle and friendly with bees and wasps... I didn't deserve that >:-(

Happy to suggest. It is what my patch of this (plain green version) does in my yard. I haven't checked but this may be hardy in your area, and not need to be in a pot. But it has no sense of boundaries. A great cover under & around taller entities.

I have several pots of dracaena, a larger pot with a Black Diamond crepe myrtle, and another one with a cordyline. If these cuttings take root then they might end up around the bases of these pots :-)

The sedum looks pretty cool in that pot - like a wreath around the dracena. My bet is it is kept clipped to make it that thick.

It might be easiest if they take root right in those pots. You won't have to tend them separately. Floral stems are less likely to take root than leafy ones. When I click the link, it asks me to sign in before I can see anything.

Oh yes, I can see it now. Thank you. Love it!! That's a fine plant-combo pot! Violets, Sedum/Petrosedum, and I think Cordyline indivisa or australis. The leaves look a bit long for Dracaena marginata. But the specific ID is unimportant to the concept of putting Sedum at the base of a taller plant.

I love this plant. I let mines grow wild in a planter that is molding like a half of head. The top looks like hair.

I'm still missing something that I can't put my finger on, but it looks awesome as a backdrop behind my bulb flowers :-)

@Jason, zone 7A, near Greensboro NC time is all that’s needed. it’s not an overplanted bowl so just give it time & it will fill in. The lemon ball looks much thicker so pruning it was the ticket!

That pic is a top view, obviously, but most people see it from the sidewalk that's about 6' away. I LOVE the colors of everything from that angle, so I'm very pleased with how it's going :-)

What do you think about the Dragon's Blood? Will it thicken over time, or does it need to be pruned like the lemon ball?

I hear you about color from different angles. Especially when the morning sun hits it after a rain storm.
Nothing is missing. Once those grow bigger which they will and need room to spread, it will all be filled in and you’ll be happy you didn’t over crowd them. Nice job

@Jason, zone 7A, near Greensboro NC - I’ve had Dragon’s Blood in my yard too! It also will spread but isn’t as rambunctious as the Lemon Ball. I have pruned it & placed the leggy runners in other areas to grow more of the plant. In your planter, I’d leave it & only snip off runners that might be getting out of bounds & to force growth back to center of plant. . Put those pieces right back into planter to fill bare spots in center of Dragons Blood. You can see little roots all along the bare stems.
