Make sure though that you choose a climber with lax canes, however! A stiff climber won't work, of course...

And climbers with lax canes that are hardy in Minnesota are going to be once bloomers. There may be hardy shrub roses that have lax enough canes to cover some of the wall. Because the roots are going to be somewhat exposed because of the wall, don't skimp on hardiness. This isn't a situation where any rose is going to be able to take the conditions.

Thanks, mad_gallica. Would it help to stagger a row of shrubs behind it? There is some protection from the wind already, but not a lot. I am zone 4, but pretty close to zone 3.

The issue isn't necessarily wind in this case. It's that the roots on the wall side won't have the insulating soil that plants in the ground usually have. It's a raised bed on that side. People have discussed lining raised beds with things like styrofoam insulation, but I don't know how long that lasts, or how effective it is.

Ahhh I see. Styrofoam type insulation helped a LOT when we used it to line our upper basement exterior walls pre-renovation. Worth a try at the very least!
