I have an Oroblanco from a rooted cutting that is getting quite large. It is growing outward in all directions ... but up. I wish I had staked and trained a vertical branch early on.

I think you still could at this point. Take your longest branch and tie it up to a tall stake. You may have to re-tie (tighten) the branch every couple weeks, but it can be done slowly over time. If the long branch is too thick, then wait until fruit is picked and cut it back. Then choose the most vertical branch and stake that. This is all assuming you want a standard form with trunk.

It looks as though you've lost your leader. This might be what your plant is trying to achive with this longer, actively growing branch. You might try - grdually - getting this long branch to go upright. By staking it upright for a few years it should take over it's rightful position and stand alone.

I have been painfully trying to make the long branch the leader for the past year. Its been difficult indoors and it had flimsy roots for most of the year. Its staked as upright as I can in a Tbar right now. It already had that shape when I got it so I don't think it could ever be anything but a bush. We'll see how it looks when the growth spurt ends might snip it back. I was keeping the branch to not defoliate it too much when it was young

totally agree with you on this mike. I'm thinking of removing that long ass branch when the orange is ripe. Perhaps I could Air layer if I can finally figure out how lol

You could always threaten to microwave it, and see if it grows as you say it should..? Lol

Maybe I could change its DNA and force it to grow upright with the microwaves. I read somewhere that microwaving seedlings can help them grow, maybe I could grow this tree in zone 6? ;)

I ended up tying every longer branch upwards, we'll see how it looks by summer's end. its not sprawling anymore. we will see if snipping the new growth will be necessary.
