Tuesday Ushers in Some Cool Bloom Days

After three scorching hot days, we're back to cooler nights and days for a brief respite. Unfortunately I'm reaching peak now and many, many blooms are not open in the early morning because of nights in the low 60s again. Most seemed to be open before noon though.

Odds and Ends - This was about a third of the blooms on this massive clump today.

Metallic Blue Eyes is one of the hardy, older Lambertsons that multiplies well. They eye looked bluer than usual today.

Believe in Angels ffo - I've never seen it blooming with night temps this low. It has more of a pink blush in these temperatures.

Kingdom Without End ffo

All American Chief ffo - This is one of several earlies that is blooming about 10 days later than normal. I saw my first Japanese beetle today on this bloom. Since I was wearing a glove, I picked it off and sqaushed it to death. That was very satisfying.

Lime Peel

Marley Jane has taller better, budded scapes after a fall grub treatment.

The red of the day is my Big Eight Inch seedling with a nice ffo. The cross was supposed to be Jungle queen X Amethyst Prism, but I have my doubts.

After seeing the third seedling bloom in the supposed No Boys Allowed X Hold Your Horses cross, I'm sure I mixed up pods during harvest and mislabeled the seeds. Every one of these is lavender or purple with a white edge and a few teeth. I think the cross must really be Forty Days and Forty Nights x Absolute Ripper, but I can't be sure. That's the only cross I made that year that would yield seedlings looking like this. Anyway I've liked all three seedlings so far. One more to bloom.

Cexy Samantha X Bubblegum Delicious #3 - This has been a great cross! All four of these seedlings have the white edges I was seeking and nice shades of pink.

Nice seedlings. I really like the red one. Also Lime Peel is an interesting color and shape. Marley Jane is a beautiful color with a lovely shape.

Low 60s! Here, low 50s--for a short time. It feels wonderful to have June temps closer to normal. We were robbed of days in the 70s. Marley Jane is a looker, as many Waldrops are. I also want a performer. The unknown parentage 8-inch seedling is my fave.

We thought 105 was bad, how about 108 today (and close to that tomorrow). And I was out gardening in it. After all that water dumped on us this spring and I'm now having to water my pots every day to keep up with the heat................Nice selection of daylilies. Have to go with Marley Jane, Love the ruffles. What color would you call that in person? ......Love your pink seedling too. I prefer yellow edges, but you are the hybridizer and the white edges are certainly appealing. Also the red one looks promising...............Maryl

Same here Debra with the overnight temps dropping to the low 60's. But having a day in the 70's and no humidity was refreshing. I agree with others that the 8 inch seedling is really nice even if your not sure of the parentage. Marley Jane is very pretty with the ruffles. I'll have to go lookup Lime Peel. I like the contrast. Great post.

Oh Maryl, 108 sounds awful! Marley Jane is a coral. That photo was taken in semi-shade. In the late morning's full blasting sun, it can look like more orange:

Marley Jane is the named one that really caught my eye. Does it open ok with all that big ruffle? Love that Big Eight Inch seedling too, it must be really impressive in person. It may not be No Boys Allowed seedling, but whatever the parent, I like it and its siblings.

Gosh, Maryl, that is so hot! I will stop grumbling because last night they said 83 high today, now they say 85, a whole 2 degrees. Grumble, grumble. Oh, I was going to stop that. I got so much done yesterday and hoping to do as much today. I hope you get a break from heat soon

Nancy - Yes, Marley Jane normally opens well. Yesterday it was open well early when thousands of other blooms were not because of low night temps. Thanks for your comment about the Not No Boys seedlings. I'm very pleased with them.

I really like the red seedling and as for the purple or lavender one with teeth that you aren't sure about the parenting on, it is really lovely. As for the regulars, All American Chief and Odds and Ends are really nice, but Lim Peel is the ones I liked best.

Thanks for your comments, kay! Lime Peel was very nice yesterday, and it is more yellow than my photo shows. I don't do a good job photographing yellows. They always look a lighter yellow than they should.
