What are your needs and intentions for the laundry room, and for the loft? How does your family read? Some people like an isolated, quiet spot, others like activity of some kind around them, to read.

What is your intention for the desk? What is the rest of the family’s intention?

Now, just from my own perspective, I like a laundry room that can be an apparel care room, with space to store and use an iron, ironing board, steamer, and have space for detergents, pre-treats, bleach, oxy, dryer sheets (I use them only occasionally), and oh yes, have a decent, accessible, cleanable dryer duct.

I agree with bpath. Figure out exactly what you want/need for loft space. Frankly, our loft is not very useable for several reasons, but being too open to noise and smell are two of them. Our laundry room is a joke - constantly bumping into things, no place to hang dry, etc. If it were my decision, I’d never have a loft again and would double the size if the laundry room.
