its weird you have one maturish set of leaves.. and a bunch of youngins ... it should do that.. if all is well ...

What Ken said. Some issue with the roots - either too deep, root rot, competing tree roots or (gasp) voles eating the roots. If you can't tell, its time to dig it up to find out.

last year the two hostas were much fuller by late june. and this year i am noticing slower growth for the first time. did not think of something being wrong until you pointed out the uneven growth and potential problems. the plants are located under a magnolia but much further from the base compared to my other hostas which are doing great barely 3 feet away from the trunk.

this is a dry well drained and elevated bed, but now that you mentioned root rot i will have to dig up and check. the tree root trying to encroach is also a possibility. did not notice any entry point for voles, this is front bed with barely any hiding spot. i do have chipmunks - they are continuously digging around plant bases. i also had bad deer damage on both plants last july (hardly a week late in applying repellant and paid the price).
