The bearings on the motor are shot. We don't replace motors. We replace the entire pump.

Replacing the motor entails replacing the seal and typically other parts such as an impeller or diffuser. By the time you add up the new parts and labor, you're generally about 50%-60% of the cost of a new pump.

With a new pump, you have a new and longer warranty.

By July 19th, the Department of Energy is requiring variable speed pumps on new installs.

This may be a time to consider a VS pump. They carry an upfront cost, but have a good payback over time.

So, how much time do you think I have before the pump seizes. I realize that you don't know what's wrong with it, but how long do they generally run after they start to become noisy?

As I stated, I'm pretty the bearings are shot.

Pump motors generally last 5-7 years on seasonal pools. Because we shut our pools in our region, the motor gets a chance to collect moisture and develop corrosion over the winter. Year round pumps will last longer.

Variable speed pumps running continuously, are always hot and moisture is not an issue.

Thanks again Mystic. 5-7 years is about the age of the motor. I live in Southern Ontario, so winter conditions are not conducive to a long life.
