MeyerMike if just slipping plant into a bigger container Without root pruning it can be done if roots are root bound enough not to make it fall apart.

If you can pull plant out of its container WITH OUT the potting mix falling apart and disturbing the roots your good to go .

Just make sure you have container ready to put plant into and put plant in shade .

I agree with dieseler. What will kill or damage the fig is not doing something now.

Martin, I appreciate the advice and ok to go ahead without disturbing the roots. Crazy how fast they outgrow a pot that size and by late summer most of my trees are too big for their pots. Going to have to invest in spray timed emitters when that happens until I can pot up again.

I've had to do exactly the same thing several times. I agree there is no problem if you take care not to mess with the roots.

Another way to water a root bound fig tree is by using a tree root feeder i have one bought years back for regular young street trees's planted here back then.

Has a small clear container on its top for fertilizer to mix with water but one can just leave the container empty when using.

Garden hose attaches to it and has a powerful blast of water works well and enables one to wait until winter to properly rootprune a fig plant if so chooses.
