Should I replace my new 30" cooktop with a double oven range?

Hi! I appreciate any feedback. I am doing a new build and I am not totally happy with the kitchen appliance package I selected. However, that ship has sailed and I am not able make any changes at this point so I am thinking of ways to modify or add kitchen appliances once the house is completed so I can end up with a kitchen I like aesthetically and functionally at a minimal cost.

The package I ended up with consists of GE Cafe wall oven with the microwave/combo on top, a 30" cooktop with drawers under a 30" hood, and a 48" subzero fridge. I somewhat regret going with a 30" cooktop however I mostly have made peace with that. The thing I am debating now is whether to add extra ovens and how to best do it.....

1. One option is replacing the cooktop with a GE Cafe slide in 6 burner range ( I like the look), this would give me 2 extra smaller ovens while also having the full size oven, not sure about the aesthetics with going to a range having a cooktop now (this would be the least expensive).

2. Another option is to keep the cooktop and add a smaller steam oven in the base cabinet between the fridge and regular oven, this would give me an extra oven while keeping the cooktop look....

3. Another option is to keep the cooktop and add a single GE Cafe convection oven under it, this keeps the cooktop look while having the added oven.

4. Another is to have the slide in range with double ovens in place of the cooktop and also add the wall steam oven between the fridge and the regular oven.

Please let me know what you think is a better look........ Ideally I want to add extra ovens, however I don't want to end up with a worst look.

There's a cabinet wraparound area in the butlers going to the formal dining room, but I am thinking this is not a good spot for any ovens as it's all counter space with uppers and is away from main kitchen triangle.

I welcome any other suggestions to achieve my goal that I haven't considered. I am trying to minimize having to modify cabinets.

Thanks for any help on this been spinning my wheels quite a bit!

I vote for slide in range. I think the cook top with oven in the cabinet below is unnecessarily expensive and doesn't look good anyway.

Maybe consider buying a breville countertop oven and seeing how that works for you in the short term. After awhile, if you really can't deal with your cooking space, THEN consider changing things up. Wall ovens require additional electrical that you probably do not have installed (dedicated 240V circuit). Even the range option may require electrical that you don't have. The easiest might be to change the wall oven/micro to a double oven.

anj_p Thanks for the suggestion, hadn't considered that. It doesn't have the aesthetics I was going for but it's certainly functional. For the slide in range I was going to go with the all gas option so the expense would be purchasing the range, cutting the granite and removing the cabinet. Thanks!

Sell or swap the cooktop now as new for a 36" or 30" Miele or Bosch induction with a Miele XXL Combi Steam oven below.

Your initial post seemed to suggest you wanted an extra oven. What are the particular aesthetics you want? The look of a range? A lot of people think a cooktop has better aesthetics than a range (except for maybe a high end range like a Wolf, or a Hallman where the aesthetic is specific). I would say I am in that camp. I also don't love the look of a wall oven below a cooktop. So your aesthetic may be different from others. If you want a range, you can probably swap it out easily enough.

If it's not too late, get the DW on the other side of your sink.

@anj_p I think I have your same level of preference as far as aesthetics, cooktop better generally unless it's a commercial looking range. However I can't really do that option at this point so I am just trying to make the best of what I got by improving it a little. I am trying to both maintain or improve the look and add at least one more oven while minimizing costs. Thanks for your comments!

Definitely don't use a slide in range. You have it postioned right across from your sink, and won't want something sticking out further into the walkway, on top of effecting your cabinets and counertop. We love our countertop Breville toaster oven, and use it more often than either of our double ovens because it heats so quickly. How often would you really need two full sized ovens?

Does your current kitchen have the three, four, or even five ovens that you are describing here?

    I like Sabrina's idea.

Are the MW and oven separate appliances that are installed independently with the MW installed above the wall oven?

If the former, then another option is a Steam oven above and a regular wall oven below. Steam ovens are usually smaller and maybe that combination would fit in the cabinet as-is? You might only have to replace the MW and keep the existing bottom wall oven.

Or, instead of a steam oven, maybe a GE Café Advantium? Advantiums operate as a standalone MW, standalone oven, or combined as a "speed oven" (cooking with oven & MW energy combined).

If they're one appliance, then the above won't work without swapping out the cabinet as Sabrina mentions.

Calidesign is right -- the way your layout is right now, a range is not a good idea unless the aisle b/w the island counter edge and the cooktop counter edge is at least 50" (the extra 2" is to accommodate a range that sticks out farther than the counters).

It's not just the sink, the bigger issue is that there's an overlap with the proposed range location and the DW. The DW is already an obstacle b/w the refrigerator and sink (when the DW is open), don't compound it by putting something in that will make it worse.

Does anyone see and issue with the steam oven in the base cabinet between fridge and regular oven? Where the 3 drawers are?

@calidesign @Buehl I am waiting to hear from the builder on exactly what I am getting for the wall ovens, whether combined, separate and if the top one is the Advantium version. Regardless if it's the Advantium I wanted a more solid oven to supplement the regular sized one. Thanks for all your comments they are helping me think through and prioritize. It seems a cooktop is they way to go in terms of function and most people's aesthetics? The Breville Toaster Oven sounds like it would be a great addition regardless!

@wdccruise I am upgrading, one of the main reasons we are moving is to get a larger kitchen. I wanted a minimum 2 decent ovens, I wouldn't mind having 3. I made a compromise so I wouldn't have the microwave with a weird cabinet by the fridge and now I am kicking myself....😊 that I don't have the extra oven and have a smaller cooktop....

You can change just that one cabinet to be a double oven and microwave.
