What to do with old terrazzo shower base?

I have a home built in 1958 with a hideous terrazzo shower base set on the basement slab. I'm pretty handy and have built bathrooms from scratch before, but I've never tackled a project involving a jackhammer, or busting into the basement slab before, so I'm a bit wary of replacing the shower base.

What do I do with this thing? Could it look nice if I had it professionally restored and I replaced the surrounding tile? Epoxy paint could be a quick, if impermanent solution. I could try tiling over it using an epoxy-based tile adhesive (it would be tough to tile the lip where the base meets the wall though--it's rounded). Or do I just give up and go rent the jackhammer and bust it out?
