New kitchen in large condo great room: opinions?

We have a large rectangular (37' x 18') great room with lovely bay views, western exposure. We are keeping the medium tone bamboo floors, and getting new furniture and kitchen. I'd like suggestions on cabinet colors and any comments on the overall kitchen design. We are meeting with the contractor tomorrow. I have attached my idea for furniture placement as well, so you can see how it all will flow together.

We are going for a streamlined, contemporary look with slab fronted, painted cabinets. Possibly a dark blue island, but the leather sample you see is for our sofa, which is 99% decided on. Cabinet samples are below, and the baseboard trim is Cloud White by BM, for reference.

We don't like the look of a range, and it would protrude into the work area, which is limited by a hole in the floor where the existing island is located. The oven needs to be off to the side of the cooktop in order to have clearance to open it. The pantry is a necessity in order to open the fridge's french door completely. 15" is rather small but I like the idea of a single motion to see the contents as opposed to opening a door and pulling out a bunch of shelves. The countertop for dining is the same height as the island. Only two people live in the condo, so it really doesn't need to be wide (it is 30" in the drawing) and I want to be able to rest while cooking and enjoy the view across the apartment to the water.

If you are near the water, I think white cabinets with a blue island could be nice. Especially if you have white walls elsewhere, the kitchen walls would blend in and the island would read more like a piece of furniture. You also could have light colored lowers, like oak or maple, that could look modern and transition from the bamboo to the white uppers.

Two more thoughts: It would look cleaner if you keep the bottom of your uppers in line with your hood or use a slide out hood as shown below:

The image below has a black kitchen, but if you imagine it as navy, it could provide some inspiration for you.

You will regret not putting in the pullout shelves in yur pantry when you need what’s in back and have to move everything in front to get to it. That’s if you remember what’s in the back. And 15 inches is not much space for a grownup to be rifling thru items. It’s tight. Just my opinion

Lisa, the pantry is one of those pullout types that the shelves are attached to the door so that in one motion you can see everything. I will have all of my baking and oils/spices supplies in one of the wall cabinets over my prep area. The pantry is more for staples and canned goods.

As for Linda K's comment about the symmetry of the uppers over the base cabinets, the view is blocked by the island so I feel that is less important than the symmetry created by the wall cabinets and the openness of the area around the hood.
