I could see no nuts

See my Nutty ID request post. At least on my tree there are 11-19 leaflets per leaf. How many does yours have? If your tree is w/o nuts look on the ground for last year's nuts. See pic of nuts in my post.

I could not see any nuts whatsoever. i looked hard. yes, at least 11 leaflets. i do not think it’s juglans nigra because it’s too cold here. i also have a baby cinerea and it looks quite similar. the reason i ask is because i’m not super familiar with nigra

Black Walnut has 13-23 leaflets per leaf.

FWIW, bark shown is quite rough and a lighter gray which is typical of butternut. Butternut leaves are also typically a bit fuzzier when matured than BW (if you could somehow compare them).

The new leaves are sticky fwiw. I don't know if that is characteristic of j. cinerea alone, or both j. cinerea and j. nigra.

Sticky new leaves is a good indication of butternut. Nut-husks are sticky too.
